How to Run Programs You Don’t Trust in Isolation Using Sandboxie

If your passion stat is anywhere higher, it’s safe to assume you install (and uninstall) quite a few programs. You also have to configure your computer to run like a smooth machine. These two states often conflict with each other when you install software that destroys your PC. Installing new and untested programs in an isolated virtual environment gives you the best of both worlds.

Sandboxie is a lightweight and compact freeware that blocks bug-prone programs and web-based malware from affecting your PC. Security Software creates a virtual sandbox and allows you to install new software, your browser, and other browser-based applications in a secure environment, protected from the deeper layers of the Operating System. Sandboxie helps you test new untested apps and decide whether to keep or discard them.

Install and run Sandboxie

Sandboxie is a 2 MB download. It runs on all 32-bit versions of Windows. During the first installation, Sandboxie may show a software compatibility box. Once confirmed, Sandboxie can make some configuration changes to its own settings and the sandboxes it creates.

Sandboxie can be run from the context menu. Right-clicking on the software allows you to choose the Run Sandboxed command. You can also open a program in the sandbox by using the Send To command from the context menu. You can also use the Default Sandbox Web Browser, which is a sandboxed copy of your default browser to browse the web in protected mode.

Alternatively, if you open Sandbox Control, you can open any program from the following menu command:

Security of the virtual environment

Try Sandboxie by opening Firefox and downloading a piece of software. All ‘sandbox’ instances of a program are identified with the ‘#’ symbol in the title bar. Sandboxed programs (in this case the Firefox browser) are also marked with a yellow outline. Any applications (e.g. Firefox add-ons) that you install in this sandboxed version of the browser will also be contained in the sandbox. In the case of Firefox, the browser that is restarted after installing the add-on will also open in the sandbox.

Sandboxie Control displays the running status of the programs running in the vault in the current sandbox. You can create multiple sandboxes.

Any files downloaded while browsing are also saved in the sandbox. Sandboxie gives you an option to restore the file and move it to the unboxed part of Windows in case you decide to keep it.

Closing Sandboxie Control will terminate all programs and restore the order of Windows that existed before you sandboxed the program. You can also delete all content from the Sandbox once you’re done.

You should be careful when using Sandboxie with your downloaders and email clients in case you are downloading something that you are not quite sure about. Sandboxie can also be used to run multiple instances of the same program. For instance, you can run your browser in normal mode and also in sandbox mode.

Sandboxie comes with a complete guide that walks you through the steps of setting it up and using it to keep your PC healthy. Run it and tell us about the utility of the sandbox application.
