How to Get Emoji and GIF Suggestions on Android

Auto Emoji suggestion is a feature available in many Android Keyboards. Including popular ones like Swiftkey. But what if you could use it as a standalone feature? What if you could integrate this feature in your existing Android Keyboard? You don’t have to trade your favorite keyboard for just one feature. Let’s see how you can do that.

Dango Emoji Toolbar

Dango is an app that automatically suggests emojis as you type in your chats. It pops up a bubble-like toolbar containing all the emojis. You can search for emojis in the bubble as shown in the image above. This app is developed by Whirlscape, the creators of Minnium Keyboard.

It can also run on Android v4.3 (and higher) but is limited to some countries. Countries include the US, UK, Australia, New Zealand and Canada. But don’t worry if you don’t reside in these countries, you can always opt for a VPN service. Use TunnelBear or Betternet’s VPN services on your Android device to avoid country-restricted apps.

How to use Dango

Download the Dango app from the Play Store. There’s not much in the way of setting up this app. As soon as you open the app, it will show you a preview of its features. You will have to grant access to the app. The app itself gives instructions. Touch Setting button in the center and it will take you to accessibility setting. Here, enable Accessibility for Dango.

It basically needs access to your trigger action, such as “use keyboard” in this case. And the next option is to get the text from the keyboard as you type. You can view this app’s Privacy Policy.

After setting up the app, open a chat app and try it out. It will pop out a bubble. Tap the bubble to open the entire window. The suggestions are pretty quick and mostly accurate.

GIF support and recommendations

Another feature available with emojis is GIFs. You also get suggestions for GIFs as you type into your chats. You’ll see a GIF button next to the emoji button. There you will find GIFs extracted right from Gify.com. And yes, it will only work in apps that support GIFs.

Inside the Dango . app

Inside the Dango app, you’ll find settings to change the bubble’s UI. You can set transparency and change background color of emoji window. Next, you can choose different emoji styles. The default style is set to change according to the font you use.

You can also choose which apps you don’t want the Dango bubble to appear in. And another feature is Word Replacement. It will replace the words with their respective emojis. For example, “cool” will change to the corresponding “Sungglass Emoji”.

It’s not perfect

The application usually uses about 60MB of RAM while it is running. And down to 20-30MB when not in use. The suggestions are mostly correct but still need to be improved. GIFs sometimes don’t show up. Sometimes the suggestions don’t work. Well, in such case you need to search manually.
