With an estimated 400 million active users, Microsoft Outlook is one of the popular email clients. Like most productivity tools, Outlook’s appeal is its ability to save users time and effort. However, you may face a hiccup or two from time to time with it.
One of the common complaints about the Outlook app is that email gets stuck in the outbox. This means that the email is not delivered to the intended recipient and is still delivered. For such a situation, there are various fixes and you can try them out.
Checking connection
The first thing to do is check the connection status of MS Outlook and the mail server. Your email messages will remain in the outbox folder as long as the server is offline. A quick way to check the connection status and fix it is explained in the steps below:
Step 1: At the bottom of the Microsoft Outlook window, check Connected to Microsoft Exchange or Connected. If either error is displayed below the window, the error is not a server related problem.
Step 2: If the status shows Working Offline at the bottom of the Microsoft Outlook window, you should switch to the Send/Receive tab. Click Work Offline to disable this feature.
Step 3: If the status shows Disconnected, it means the internet connection is faulty. Make sure your device is connected to the Internet or try switching to a new network.
check password
Email can also get stuck in your Microsoft Outlook outbox if you sign in with the wrong password. This mainly happens when there is a password change on another device. Here’s how to check if your password is up to date:
Step 1: Click the File tab.
Step 2: Select Account Settings.
Step 3: Click Account Settings from the drop-down menu.
Step 4: Click on Your Account to select and then click Change.
Step 5: Go to Login information and enter a new password in the box with the word Password.
Step 6: Click Next.
Step 7: After Outlook verifies the updates, click Close.
Step 8: Click Finish.
Open and resend email
Normally, when an email in progress is opened and closed while in the Outbox, this changes the status of the email and prevents it from leaving the Outbox. In such a situation, properties like To and Subject change from italic to regular font. The Sent menu that normally shows the mailing date will change to None. Here’s how to fix this:
Step 1: Click Outbox to open the outbox folder.
Step 2: Double click on the email content to send. This will open the email notification.
Step 3: Click Submit.
Put Outlook in Offline Mode
Here is another very effective and quick method to fix this problem. We’ll show how to do this in the steps below:
Step 1: On the Outlook Ribbon, click the Send/Receive tab.
Step 2: Click Work Offline to put Outlook in offline mode. Doing this prevents Outlook from trying to send the email.
Step 3: Click on your Outbox folder to open it.
Step 4: Drag emails from Outbox to Drafts with the cursor.
Step 5: Return to the Send/Receive tab. Click the Work Offline box to uncheck it. This will restart your connection.
Step 6: Go back to Drafts, open the email and select Send.
Restart Outlook in Safe Mode
Outlook messages may get stuck in the outbox when an installed add-in marks the email as viewed. Starting Outlook in Safe Mode disables those add-ins from affecting Outlook. Follow the steps below to restart Outlook in Safe Mode:
Step 1: Hold down the CTRL button on your keyboard and double-click the Outlook shortcut.
Step 2: Continue to hold this button until a dialog box appears asking if you want to start Outlook in safe mode.
Step 3: Click Yes.
Send large attachments via Outlook 365
Emails can also get stuck in the Microsoft Outlook outbox when they contain large attachments. Microsoft Outlook has limits on the size of attachments you can send messages. However, there are workarounds to send large attachments via Outlook 365.
