The Wayback Machine allows you to see what web pages looked like in the past.
For example, if you wanted to see what Twitter looked like in 2010, you could search for “Twitter.com” and click “2010.”
You can also use it to find deleted tweets on Twitter (if the tweet is already archived) by entering the user’s URL.
However, Twitter profiles cannot be made private for the tool to work.
Step #2: Enter the Twitter User’s URL
Once you are on the Wayback Machine, you need to enter the Twitter user’s URL in the search bar.
For example, if you want to see Elon Musk’s deleted tweets, you need to copy the link to his Twitter profile first.
You can do this by navigate to his profile on Twitter, highlight the URL and press “CTRL” + “C” on your keyboard to copy it.
After you’ve copied the Twitter user’s URL (e.g. Elon Musk), go back to the Wayback Machine and paste it in the search bar.
The link to Elon Musk’s Twitter profile is https://www.twitter.com/elonmusk.
The last part of the URL is always the person’s Twitter username.
Finally, click “Browse history” to start browsing the person’s Twitter archive.
Remember that the Wayback Machine works best for Twitter celebrities.
This is because profiles of famous people on Twitter are crawled more often than those with few followers.
That said, even if the person has less than 1,000 Twitter followers, their profile will still be crawled.
Step #3: Access the date and time before the tweet was deleted
After you click “Browse history” you will access the calendar.
The calendar contains many colored dots.
Blue means that the web server result code obtained by the crawler for capture is good (2xx).
Green means the crawler has a redirect status code (3xx).
Red means that the crawler has seen a server error (5xx).
Bigger dot means more snapshots.
On the other hand, a smaller dot means fewer snapshots.
Now you need to click on the estimated date and time before the tweet is deleted.
For example, if the tweet was posted on February 17, you need to click on the dot “February 17”.
If the tweet was posted at 11am but deleted at 1pm, you need to navigate to the snapshot after 11am but before 1pm.
If you don’t know the exact date and time the tweet was posted or deleted, you need to use the trial and error method.
Try estimating when the tweet was posted before it was deleted, and navigate to the posting date.
Step #4: Scroll down and find the deleted tweet
Once you’ve clicked on the estimated date and time before the tweet was deleted, you’ll go to the person’s Twitter profile.
Now, you need to click on “Tweets & Reply” to see all the tweets and replies of that person.
Don’t just view the person’s tweets because you won’t be able to see their replies.
Finally, you need to scroll down and find the deleted tweet.
If you choose the correct date and time, you will be able to find the deleted tweet.
However, if you can’t find the deleted tweet, you need to choose a different date and time.
Repeat the process until you succeed.
In the screenshot above, I found one of Elon Musk’s deleted replies comparing Trudeau to Hitler using the Wayback Machine.
That tweet drew a lot of media attention and criticism.
Elon realized that the meme was a bit insensitive and deleted it after a few hours.
Conclusion
The phrase “Once on the internet, always on the internet” is accurate thanks to tools like the Wayback Machine.
While the Wayback Machine can be used to find deleted tweets, it makes no sense to unsubscribe someone from a tweet they posted years ago.
This makes it difficult for free speech on social media platforms like Twitter because everyone is worried about voicing their opinions—even if they are facts.
This is why some people decide to stay anonymous on Twitter using a fake name.
