3 Ways To Sync DRM-Free eBooks To Kindle Paperwhite

2014 04 02 13 16 10 1

The Kindle Paperwhite is an excellent e-reader, and its most notable feature is its backlit e-ink display. Normally, using a Kindle device means you can only read books purchased from the Kindle Store, but there are more options out there. You can read any DRM-free eBook on your Kindle device. Yes, it requires a bit of effort, but it is achievable.

For this tutorial you will need.

  • A Kindle device
  • One Micro USB connector
  • Great software for Windows
  • Internet access and WiFi connection for Kindle

First Things First – Setting Up Caliber

For an avid reader, the Caliber is a must-have. It manages your e-book collection with metadata and cover art in one central place. It even allows you to convert DRM-free books to different formats and sync them to your device. Caliber is a one-stop shop for e-book management. (You can download Caliber from here.)

Before you start, set it up properly. When you launch Caliber for the first time, the application runs the welcome wizard. From the first step, choose where you want to save your e-book collection. I recommend using the Dropbox folder for this purpose. This way you will have access to all your books from any device.

Next, choose the manufacturer and model. Finally, enter the Kindle email address associated with your device. You can find your device’s email address by following this guide. Adding your Kindle email address to Caliber will be useful for transferring books wirelessly. We will cover this later in the article.

1. Synchronization with Caliber (Wired)

Now that you have Caliber set up, transfer the books you downloaded on your PC to Kindle.

Step 1: Connect your device to your PC using the included USB Cable.

Step 2: To add a DRM-free book that you downloaded, simply drag it from the folder into the Caliber window and it will be imported. Alternatively, you can use more books options from the menu bar.

Step 3: Convert the book (optional) — if the book you downloaded is in EPUB format, you need to convert it to MOBI first. Right click on the book and word Convert books option choose Individual conversion. Besure that Output Format read MOBI and ALRIGHT. See our detailed guide to converting eBooks. Also, learn about the different e-book formats.

Step 4: Sync books – right click on the book you want to sync and from Send to device optional, select Send to main memory.

The eBook, along with associated metadata and cover art, is now available on your device.

2. Copy and Paste (Wired)

This is the simplest method, but you don’t get any organization features.

Step 1: Connect your device to your PC and wait for the device menu to pop up. Or go to My computer and choose Burned from the device menu.

Copy paste

Step 2: Enter Documents folder. Here, all the eBooks you have on your device will be listed. If you want to get any DRM-free ebooks in MOBI format, just paste the book into this folder, safely remove your Kindle and the book will be available in your device.

3. Email to Kindle Devices with Caliber (Wireless)

Remember to fill in your Kindle email address while setting up Caliber? It’s much easier to wirelessly transfer e-books to your Kindle device.

Your Kindle has a unique email address. When you email that address with an attachment that Kindle can read, Kindle services automatically push that file to your address. Document folder. You can directly send e-books to your Kindle device like this, but the only catch is that instead of displaying on Book list, they will be in Document list.

In Caliber, right click on the book you want to send and from Connect/share option choose Incoming email (your email address). The next time you start up your Kindle and connect it to the internet or WiFi, the book will automatically be downloaded to your device.

DRM or No DRM?

DRM (Digital Rights Management) has always been a controversial issue in the publishing world. What is your opinion about it? Do you think today’s world has room for DRM? Do you circumvent the DRM on eBooks before sending them to Kindle?
