Apple removed the physical home button completely with the 2017 iPhone X. Since then, it has relied on Face ID and a gesture-based iOS system. There are still millions of old iPhones and many of them have broken, broken or dysfunctional home buttons. Here’s how you can use your iPhone without the home button.
Activating and Using AssistiveTouch
AssistiveTouch is part of the Accessibility feature in iOS that lets you use your iPhone when you have trouble touching the screen or accessing certain OS functions.
This is not designed with the average consumer in mind, as you might have guessed. It is ideal for those who require an accessory that adapts to touch the screen.
Using the same option, you can easily replace most of the iOS functions you perform with a physical home button. You need to enable the AssistiveTouch toggle from the Settings menu. This is the way.
Step 1: Open Settings on iPhone.
Step 2: Scroll down to the Accessibility menu.
Step 3: Select Induction from the Physics and Engine menus.
Step 4: Go to the AssistiveTouch menu and enable the toggle from the following menu.
You should see a circular AssistiveTouch button pop up on your iPhone. This will help you to take a screenshot, return to the home button, show the control center, etc. Let’s check the default functions.
Return to the iPhone Home screen: Tap AssistiveTouch and select Home screen to return to the home screen. This is extremely useful when working with a faulty or broken home button on an iPhone and feeling frustrated by not being able to return to the home screen.
Screenshot: iPhones with a physical home button require the use of a combination of the home and volume down buttons to take a screenshot. The functionality is built right into the AssistiveTouch button. Tap on it and select Screenshot to take a screenshot.
In the process of physical damage, you may have damaged the bottom part of your iPhone home screen and it may be hindering the access to Control Center.
Control Center: Select AssistiveTouch and touch Control Center to open the menu.
Customize AssistiveTouch
The iPhone’s home button is also useful for opening the app switcher menu and switching between apps and games quickly. You may need to access the multitasking menu and close some apps to free up RAM on your phone.
Normally, you can double-click your iPhone’s home button and open the app switcher menu to make changes. Since the home button doesn’t work, we’ll use AssistiveTouch to access the multitasking menu.
By default, AssistiveTouch does not come with App Switcher functionality. However, you can easily customize the layout from the Settings menu.
Step 1: Open Settings on iPhone.
Step 2: Move to the Accessibility menu.
Step 3: Select Touch and go to the AssistiveTouch menu.
Step 4: Tap Top level customization Menu.
Step 5: Tap + and add another icon to AssistiveTouch.
Step 6: Select the blank icon and find the Application Switcher option from the following menu.
Tap Done at the top and you’re ready to access the App Switcher menu from AssistiveTouch.
Tap AssistiveTouch and select App Switcher. iOS will take you to the multitasking menu to make changes.
Once you get used to using AssistiveTouch on your iPhone, you’ll want to use the same for every function. Most of the functions are hidden under the Devices menu.
Tap AssistiveTouch and select Devices. You can rotate the screen from the following menu, mute iPhone, use volume up/down, and even lock the screen.
It is very useful when you have broken volume buttons or power and home buttons on your iPhone.
Enable Tap on Wake
It’s time to enable tap-to-wake feature from Settings because a broken iPhone home button won’t help you turn on the screen.
Step 1: Open the iPhone Settings menu.
Step 2: Go to Accessibility and select Touch.
Step 3: Turn on Tap to Wake from the following menu.
You can now wake up the screen when you tap it – no need to reuse a broken home button.
Use touch back gesture
If AssistiveTouch has more functionality, you can enable touch again and lock the screen, or use the app switcher menu without the home button. This is the way.
Step 1: Open iPhone Settings and go to Accessibility.
Step 2: Open Touch and scroll down to Back Tap.
You can use double-tap or triple-tap gestures. Within each gesture, you have an option to customize the gesture.
Note that the touch back gesture may not work as expected with thick iPhone cases.
You don’t need to upgrade to the latest iPhone model to avoid the required physical home button. You can comfortably continue using your iPhone without the home button.
