How to Rename a Mail Account on Windows 8 Mail App

Windows 8 Mail is the new native email desktop client of Windows. And, looking at the interface and features I would say that it isn’t a bad choice if you are not looking at doing complicated things. Now, when you add an email account it is given the name of the service it belongs to. For instance, I have Outlook mail configured and it shows the name as Outlook.

That should be fine if you are adding a single account or accounts from different services. But, if you add multiple accounts from the same service it may create some confusion for the user. So, the idea is to rename the accounts to make them more distinguishable from each other.

Steps to Rename Email Account on Mail App

Before you begin you should have at least one email service added to the application. Else, what would you rename?

Step 1: Launch Windows 8 Mail app by going to the Start Screen.

If it is not there you may bring up the app search screen (Windows key + W) and look for it.

Step 2: Once you are in, you will see your list of accounts on the left pane. Hit and hover your mouse on the right edge of the screen to bring up the Charm Bar. Hit on the icon for Settings.

Step 3: That will bring up a Settings section on the right portion of the screen. Choose Accounts.

Step 4: From the list of accounts that you have select the one you wish to rename. In my case it is Outlook.

Step 5: You will see a new screen where the account name is rendered on an editable text box. Give it a new name and exit. You will see it take effect immediately.

There are other things that you may configure here. It is up to you to try them and use them as per your comfort level.
