Sometimes, you want to blur part of an image to hide details. While powerful image editing tools are capable of doing the same thing, choosing the best one for your needs and comfort can be a challenge. Thankfully, Microsoft has made new Paint 3D capable enough to let you partially blur a photo on your Windows desktop or laptop. Sure, it’s a little tricky, and that’s why we’re here to help.
That said, Paint 3D, similar to its brother MS Paint, doesn’t offer a dedicated blur option. So the process is not straightforward, but there are some workarounds. You can use Paint 3D to blur screenshots, sub-objects, and even the background.
Check out different methods to pixelate or blur part of an image in Paint 3D on Windows 10.
Method 1: Blur with Select Tool
In this method, you need to select the area that you want to blur. Then you need to reduce its size as small as possible. When that happens, resize it again to fit the original area. The selected part of the photo will be blurred.
Here are the detailed steps:
Step 1: Launch Paint 3D app on your Windows 10 PC and open the image.
Step 2: Click the Select tool present in the Brushes tab.
Step 3: Select the part that you want to blur. For example, in the following image, I want to blur the toy.
Step 4: Using the bottom right corner of the selection, drag the selection box inward to reduce its size. Make it very small. But keep in mind that it’s just enough to be resizable.
Click anywhere on the image. You will see that the remaining area becomes white.
Step 5: Select the area that you have resized. Make sure not to include any whitespace from the remaining area.
Now, instead of reducing the size, increase its size using the bottom right corner to fit the white area.
Step 6: Click anywhere on the image. Your image with partial blur is ready.
Note: You may run into trouble at first. But after trying a few times, you will feel comfortable blurring images in Paint 3D. Of course, this method doesn’t result in one of the neatest outputs. However, the image should be good enough to share on social networks or messaging apps.
Method 2: Cover with the same area
In this method, we will blur the part of the image with pixels from the neighborhood. The advantage of this method is that the final image looks less retouched (or sticky) than the previous method. If you do it carefully, you can easily remove objects and text from your images.
Here are the steps for the same:
Step 1: Open your image in Paint 3D application.
Step 2: Select a small part to the right or left near the area you want to blur or hide using the Select tool. For example, in the following screenshot, I want to hide the text ‘M Voda added you’. I will choose the right area.
Step 3: Using the center box of the selection, drag it towards the area you want to hide. With the help of other small boxes, you can adjust its size and position.
Step 4: Click anywhere to apply it. This is how the final image will look.
Method 3: Using the Magic Select Tool
This method uses Paint 3D’s awesome Magic Select tool to blur part of the image. To do so, we need to first select the section using the Magic select tool and then autofill the background using it.
Here are the steps:
Step 1: Open your image in Paint 3D.
Step 2: Click the Magic select tool included in the Brushes option.
Step 3: A box will appear over your image. Using the small selection boxes, select the area that you want to blur. For example, I want to blur the monkey in the following image. Then click Next on the right side.
Step 4: Using the Add or Remove buttons, refine the selection if the automatic selection is not perfect. Make sure the Autofill background is selected. Finally, tap Done.
Step 5: You will notice new icons around your selected image.
Press the Delete key on your keyboard. That will remove the desired area and fill it with a blurred background that looks similar to your actual image.
Sew carefully
If you want to blur multiple images, we recommend downloading an image editing tool that provides a dedicated button for that tool. It’s pretty easy that way. You can try free tools like PhotoScape, GIMP, PicsArt, etc. For one-time or casual use, Paint 3D will serve you well.
