Although dedicated to image processing, Adobe has quietly added video editing support to Lightroom. If you’re a Lightroom subscriber or Creative Cloud user, update the app and do video editing tricks in a familiar interface.
Adobe Lightroom remains one of the favorite applications of photographers for photo editing. The company has brought similar great photo editing tools to videos. You can now apply presets, change lighting, colors, and effects, or even crop videos in Lightroom. You no longer need to use another video editing application to make small changes.
1. Trim video
As the name suggests, the Crop tool allows you to cut unnecessary scenes from the video. Here’s how you can import a video in Lightroom and trim it.
Note: Lightroom for Windows and Mac use an identical user interface. We used Lightroom for Mac in the example below. You can use the same steps on Lightroom’s Windows app and get the job done.
Step 1: Open Lightroom on Windows or Mac.
Step 2: Select File on the menu bar and click Add Photos.
Step 3: It will open the Finder menu. Find your video, select it and click the ‘Review for Import’ button.
Step 4: Select the crop icon from the right sidebar.
Step 5: Lightroom will activate the orange slider to trim the video. After you cut it, click the share icon at the top to export the video.
2. Rotate & Flip Video
Does your little one shoot videos in an awkward direction? Using Lightroom, you can easily rotate and flip videos for a better viewing experience.
Step 1: Import the video into Lightroom (refer to the steps above).
Step 2: Select the crop icon from the sidebar.
Step 3: Lightroom offers four rotate and flip options to straighten your video.
After you correct the orientation, continue reading to correct the lighting and color.
3. Make color adjustments
Lightroom allows you to adjust color temperature, tone, vibrance, and saturation in a video clip. Follow the steps below to make the relevant changes.
Step 1: After you import the video into Adobe Lightroom (check the steps in the first section), select the Edit button in the top right corner.
Step 2: Expand the Color menu.
Step 3: Use the sliders to adjust hue, saturation, vibrance, tint, and shadow.
You can also expand the Color Mixer and Color Grading menus for further editing. Don’t go overboard with so many video editing options at your fingertips. You end up ruining a video instead of making it better. Keep changes subtle and minimal.
4. Use video effects to give a cinematic look
This is our favorite tool for applying cinematic effects to videos. Follow the steps below to use the Vignette tool.
Step 1: You can drag and drop videos from Finder or File Explorer into Lightroom to start editing.
Step 2: Open the Edit menu and expand Effects.
Step 3: Use the Vignette slider and check out the live effects in real time.
You can apply particle effects to give your video another neat look.
5. Play with lightweight tools
You can adjust the exposure, contrast, highlights, shadows, whites and blacks in the video. Check them out in action.
Step 1: Import the video and go to the edit menu (check the steps above).
Step 2: Expand the Lighting menu and make the necessary changes using the slider.
After you understand the basics of such tools, you will be happy to make changes in the video to your liking.
You can also expand the Profile menu and select ‘Browse all profiles’ to check the Art, Modern and Classic filters in action.
6. Check video presets
Ready-to-use presets are one of the great features of Adobe Lightroom. It’s good to see that Adobe has similar support for video as well. Check it out in action.
Presets analyze your videos and make ready-to-use recommendations to give your boring videos a professional look. You can also create a separate list of Presets to quickly use it on all your videos and photos.
Step 1: Open the video editing menu in Adobe Lightroom.
Step 2: Select ‘Preset’ at the top.
Step 3: The ‘Recommended’ tab will analyze the video to make editing suggestions.
Step 4: Go to ‘Premium’ tab to check more presets.
Whether you’re editing travel vlogs, food videos, landscape views or vintage footage, there’s a dedicated preset for all types of videos.
Don’t confuse Lightroom with Professional Video Editing Tool
Lightroom is not a professional video editing tool. Similar to Photoshop for images, you need Adobe Premier Pro to unlock more professional video editing tools.
