The Security and Privacy options make Telegram popular alongside stickers and countless other features. You can easily delete, auto-delete and even add an extra layer of security with Secret Chats in Telegram. And that’s why you can see Telegram messages disappearing in the chat.
Telegram doesn’t take the easy route like WhatsApp, nor does it go as deeply into the security aspect as Signal. Instead, it strikes a good balance between security and convenience, and gives users all the tools to protect their messages.
You may see Telegram messages disappearing from the chat. However, before you fix that, you need to know why and how your Telegram messages keep disappearing.
Someone else is deleting the message
On WhatsApp, you have a certain window of time to delete messages from both parties. And even if you try to delete the message from both parties, the recipient will say the message has been deleted.
There is no such limitation on Telegram. You can go back to a message from two months ago and delete it for your convenience. Just long press on a message and tap the delete icon. Delete for both users and you’re good to go.
The troublesome part is that you don’t see any trace that the message has been deleted. It was simply deleted without any indication.
The other person deleted the entire chat
Telegram also allows users to delete entire conversations. If someone else uses this trick, you won’t see any chat threads in the Telegram app.
On Android, long-press a conversation and tap the delete icon at the top. Turn on ‘Also delete for others’ and tap Delete chat.
On iPhone, swipe left on the chat thread and tap Delete. Select ‘Delete for me and others.’
Again, you won’t know when the other person deleted the chat. It simply disappeared from Telegram.
Automatically clear history
This is one of the main reasons why your Telegram messages disappear. Telegram offers an option to delete history automatically in the app. You can set a timer and delete chat from the other side after a certain time.
Here’s how to set it up so you can understand why messages are deleted.
Step 1: Open Telegram on your phone.
Step 2: Open any chat and tap the three-dot menu at the top.
Step 3: Select Clear history and it will open a bottom menu for further customization.
Step 4: Activate ‘Also clear history for others.’
Step 5: Choose a time frame to automatically delete messages in the application.
You can set Telegram messages to automatically delete from 24 hours to 1 month. You can also create the same setup from the Telegram desktop apps. This is the way.
Step 1: Launch Telegram on Mac or Windows.
Step 2: Click on any chat.
Step 3: Select the three-dot menu at the top and open Clear Chat History.
Step 4: Select the timeframe and click the delete chat history button.
Step 5: Enable the option to delete chat history for others.
Now imagine a scenario where another user has explicit chat history enabled for 24 hours or 1 week. In that case, you will see Telegram messages automatically disappear in the app.
Use Telegram secret chat
Are you using secret chat in Telegram to communicate with others? In Secret Chat, messages self-destruct after a few seconds. It is mainly useful for private or confidential information.
When you start talking to someone via secret chat in Telegram, you have the option to set a self-destruct timer. From there you can set a timer that can be from 5 to 7 seconds and all messages will automatically delete after the set time.
You’ll see a small pop-up showing the amount of time after which the message will disappear in the app.
Learn Telegram’s security functions
As mentioned earlier, there is no solution if someone else deletes the chat or message in Telegram. If you come across an important message, take a scrolling screenshot of the entire conversion. Unfortunately, there is no way to export the entire chat in Telegram.
