How to Use Scheduler and Grabber in IDM – Guiding Tech

Internet Download Manager is one of the applications that I trust. Sure, there are other download managers for Windows, but for me none are as good as IDM. Many IDM users may not be familiar with the extra features it offers, the two main ones being Scheduler and Grabber. Scheduler, as the name implies, schedules downloads and Grabber pulls multiple downloads from a website.

Planner

The scheduler is located at the top of the IDM window. Clicking the icon will open the Scheduler window. Below queue on the left you have two standard queues. You can create your own by pressing new queue.

Each queue has its own settings page that you can tailor to your needs. You can set the download start/stop time to a specific date or a specific hour. I have it set to start downloading at 12pm and stop downloading in the morning.

But what if the download ends in the middle of the night and you don’t want your PC running all the time? IDM has you covered – once the download completes, it can disconnect, close itself, or even shut down the PC. Now one question remains, how do I add files to the queue?

Download queue

To add files to the queue, you must click Download later on the download dialog, which appears when you click the download link. It will open a small drop-down menu where you select the queue that you want to download.

Queuing is useful when you have to bulk download files in the background, such as all the videos in a YouTube playlist. Or a bunch of pictures from a web page. Hmm, is there really a better way to do this than the Scheduler… Grabber, perhaps?

Cool Tip: Scheduling downloads is useful, but what about when it takes up all your bandwidth and your browser suffers? You can let downloads run in the background without clogging your speed by setting a speed limit in Download > Speed Limit.

Grabber

As I said, for downloading images from the website, Grabber is superior to the Scheduler. While it is impossible to compare the two because their functions are different, Grabber is very good at getting files of the same type or even entire web pages for download. You no longer have to click every link you want to download, just define some rules in Grabber settings and it will do the rest. You can find the Grabber option at the top of the IDM window. Follow these steps on how to set it up.

Step 1: When you click on the Grabber icon, you will see this window. Name the project (can also be saved) and paste the link from where you want to get it (download). To continue click Next.

Step 2: Here you can adjust where the files are saved. It is better to choose another folder to download Grabber, but the final decision is still up to the user. You can activate Convert links in downloaded html file to local file to save an exact copy of the web page for offline viewing. The other options are self explanatory. To continue, click Next.

Step 3: In the third step, you have to set up the fetcher depth to find the files to download. Level 0 means it only looks on the website of the link you provided, while Level 1 means it explores each link provided on the site.

Step 3 E1430674275851

For example, if you have provided Google.com as the website address, level 0 will only get the Google.com icon and html file, while level 1 will access Google Images, news, Gmail, etc. and get those files as well. You will receive the image.

Step 4: Here you have to choose the type of file you want or don’t want Grabber to download. It can be anything – an image, a document, or a video. If you want to start downloading all files immediately after the loader holds them, tick Start downloading all matching files at once.

Step 41 E1430751817552

Another useful setting here is Download if file size is, which you can set to avoid or include certain files depending on their size.

Step 5: This is the final window that starts the data retrieval process. If you chose Start downloading all matching files at once, the download will start automatically or you will have to select the necessary files manually. In the image below, the images taken by Grabber from this Tech Tutorial article are shown. I set level 0, only images and file size not less than 5 kb. The results are pretty close to what I expected.

Conclusion

Today we have seen that the only use of IDM is not just downloading videos from YouTube. I’ve used Grabber to bulk download images from websites, download a bunch of PDFs from forums, and on many other occasions. Would love to hear your views and experiences with IDM.
