Have you ever had a tune stuck in your head but couldn’t remember the name of the song? It can be a stressful and anxiety-provoking experience. However, thanks to speech processing and speech recognition technology, you can find a song by humming it within seconds.
Although the market is flooded with music discovery software like Shazam, Beatfind, Musixmatch, etc., they are limited to music or audio tracks playing in the background. But thankfully we found two options that can identify songs by humming.
1. Use Google Hum to search for songs by humming

One of the most convenient ways to find songs by humming is to use Google’s “Hum to Search” feature. And while it’s only available for mobile devices, it’s certainly not limited.
You can use it through the Google app or Google widgets on your iPhone or Android device, here’s how.
Step 1: Tap the Voice Search icon (microphone) from the Google app or Google Widget.
Step 2: Next, tap the Search Song button from the bottom.
Step 3: Humming the song or melody for at least 10-15 seconds.

Note: You can also invoke this feature through the Google Assistant on your Android device. Just say “hey Google, what’s this song” and hum the song for about 10-15 seconds.
2. Ask Soundhound to find the song using Humming Online
- Platforms: iOS and Android with SoundHound app and Web with Midomi
- Noise perception: Average (7.5/10)
Midomi and SoundHound use machine learning to recognize songs. You can play an audio track, hum/whistle/sing a song or even play it on an instrument and it will give you the name, artist and lyrics.
Step 1: Open the SoundHound app on your iPhone or Android or Midomi on your browser
Step 2: Click the ‘search song’ button and start humming the song.
Within seconds, SoundHound will show you the song you’re humming. You can listen to the song in SoundHound or be redirected to a supported app (registration may be required).
Notably, SoundHound’s humming recognition database isn’t as robust or extensive as Google’s. It may take a few attempts. Moreover, you don’t even get options like Google.
Tip: We’ve found that SoundHound works better if you sing along, like nah, na, na instead of just humming along to the music.
Frequently asked questions to identify songs by humming
1. How accurate are apps and websites to recognize songs?
First, the accuracy of the song identifier is based on factors like the quality of your hum or vocals and the complexity of the tune. And then it all depends on whether the website’s application or database has that song. So while they’re helpful, they’re not perfect and may not find the song for you.
2. What should I do if the song recognizer can’t find the song I’m looking for?
If the first attempt fails, you can try humming or singing another part of the song. Though if that doesn’t work either, try using a different song identifier, as each person may have a different song database.
3. Can I find songs in different languages by humming or singing?
Yes, most song recognition apps and websites are designed to recognize tunes from songs in different languages. However, each platform will have different databases, so you will have to check.
4. Can Siri identify a song by humming?
Unfortunately there isn’t. Siri uses Shazam for such actions. And since Shazam doesn’t support this feature, Siri won’t be able to help.

As mentioned above, most music discovery platforms cannot identify songs by humming. We even tried whistling the song to them, but to no avail. We might not need any other apps, though, as Google and SoundHound have arranged it pretty well for us.
