How to Set Up and Use Twitter Via Mobile SMS

We love Twitter here at GT. And we also wrote about it. Be it a complete Twitter guide for beginners, or how to back up your Twitter stream, share music on your Twitter timeline, or use cool icons there, we’ve covered various ways to tweet and use Twitter.

You can update your Twitter status in a variety of ways and from many different clients, but one thing they all have in common is an active Internet connection. Without an Internet connection, they will not work. This is true of any other web-based service. However, in the case of Twitter, one can use a simple text message to update it. This allows even the old-schoolers among us who are content with those low-powered but sturdy and efficient mobile handsets to use Twitter on the go.

So today we will tell you how to update your Twitter status using mobile SMS. All you need is a phone that can send and receive SMS and a few dollars in your mobile account balance. Every Twitter user should know about this. You never know when you’ll need it (you know, stuck in a cave and needing help something like that..).

Here are the steps.

Step 1: Open Twitter homepage, click on your Twitter alias in the top right corner to open the drop down menu. In the menu click Settings to access your Twitter settings page.

Setting

Step 2: Once you’re on your Twitter settings page, navigate to the mobile tab to configure your country, mobile number, and carrier.

Note: If you can’t find your carrier in the list of operators, it means the service isn’t available to you yet and you’ll have to wait until Twitter makes some sort of agreement with your operator.

Step 3: In the next step, you will have to verify your number. The method of verifying the number may vary depending on your country or network service provider. Here, in my case, I have to send an SMS with the keyword GO to a special number.

Verification

Step 4: Once the mobile number is verified, you will have to choose the type of notification you want on your mobile. You can also set your unique PIN to restrict any unauthorized updates from your phone.

Step 5: Finally, set your preferred time to receive notifications and save your settings.

Notice1

You can now update your Twitter timeline by SMS, just text your tweet to the special number you received ( Here is a list numbers for all supported countries).

Update

Please note that Twitter does not charge for this SMS but your network operator may charge a fee.

Here are some twitter commands that you can use with your SMS to make your experience even better.

So the next time you want to send an urgent direct message to one of your Twitter associates and you don’t have an internet connection, remember that your SMS is also powerful enough.
