How to Use VLC As a Video Cutting Tool

Recently, we discussed how we can use Windows Movie Maker as a video cutter to separate segments from a video easily. I agree that the video trimming process is very simple, but if you are looking for an even easier way to cut out small videos and are a huge fan of VLC media player then you can also use it as a video cutter.

An additional advantage of using VLC is that those who use other operating systems such as Ubuntu, Fedora or Mac and therefore cannot use Windows Movie Maker, can also use cross-platform VLC to trim video clips.

You must download and install the latest version of VLC media player if you haven’t already. VLC is a great player that can play most multimedia files as well as video discs and various streaming protocols.

Important Note: We wrote a great VLC tutorial called VLC Media Player Ultimate Guide. It is available as a beautiful one-page as well as a downloadable e-book. And it also includes instructions for using VLC as this video cutter. So make sure you check that out.

Once you have VLC installed, just follow these simple steps:

Step 1: Launch VLC media player and activate Advanced controls located in the View menu.

Enable advanced controls

Step 2: As soon as you activate the advanced controls, you will see four additional buttons above the regular play/pause button. We will use the first button from the left called the record button. Once you’ve activated these controls, add your video. You can use Open File located in the Media menu, but as you know, I always prefer the drag and drop method.

Advanced controls

Step 3: Basically, we won’t cut the video here; we will play the video and record the segment using the built-in VLC decoder. So find the location where you want to start recording and press both play and record buttons simultaneously.

Take note

Tip: You can use the Frame by Frame button (the last button from the left in the previous controls) to navigate to the exact frame where you want to start recording.

Step 4: Press the Record button again when you want to stop recording. The clip will automatically be saved as an MP4 media file type in your Library/Videos folder in Windows 7. I’m not sure about Windows XP but you can search for it in My Documents or My Videos. Same for other operating systems.

My judgment

The above trick is great but the only downside is that the player records video frame by frame and so it’s only suitable for small cuts. You will have to sit and watch the video while VLC is recording in the background, so make sure to keep it low.
