If you use a Mac regularly, then you’re definitely excited about Yosemite, Apple’s latest version of OS X. This new system is not only the biggest difference from previous versions, but also offers a stunning new look that is both minimalist and colorful.

As usual, Yosemite is free for anyone with a Mac that supports it. You can check if your computer is eligible below:

  • iMac (Mid 2007 or later)
  • MacBook (13-inch Aluminum, Late 2008), (13-inch, Early 2009 or later)
  • MacBook Pro (13-inch, Mid-2009 or later), (15-inch, Mid/Late 2007 or later), (17-inch, Late 2007 or later)
  • MacBook Air (Late 2008 and later)
  • Mac Mini (Early 2009 or later)
  • Mac Pro (Early 2008 or later)
  • Xserve (Early 2009)

It’s also pretty easy to download and perform a quick install: just download Yosemite from the Mac App Store and double-click it once it’s finished downloading.

However, you should do a clean install instead of a simple upgrade, as a clean install removes all the clutter of previous operating systems and ensures Yosemite works like new.

That said, performing this type of installation requires some extra care and a few extra steps. So let’s go through all you have to do to do a clean install properly.

Ready? Start.

Before installing

Needless to say, if you’re going to completely erase your Mac’s hard drive to install a new operating system, you need to take some precautions. So, before starting the clean install process, make sure you…

  • Have a full backup of everything on your Mac
  • Remember the passwords of all the apps you work with often
  • Have all the licenses of apps you’ve purchased outside of the Mac App Store
  • Publish a backup of all your bookmarks and other browser information

Helpful Tip: See how you can transfer your computer’s bootable backup to an external hard drive. This is a great idea for anyone who relies heavily on their Mac.

Done with that? Great. Now let’s continue.

Create a Bootable Yosemite USB Drive

To perform a clean install of Yosemite, you will need a copy of the installer on a USB stick. This is more complicated than you think, as the original Yosemite file is a standalone application that, when used, automatically performs a quick install (not a clean install) and then deletes itself.

This is convenient for most users, but it also makes the original Yosemite installer useless if you want a clean install. So to get the installer file only on a bootable USB drive, you have several options.

Important Note: Be sure to download the Yosemite file from the Mac App Store and plug the USB drive into your Mac before you begin.

Use a dedicated app

Step 1: This is definitely the easiest way to create your bootable Yosemite USB drive. To do that, first download the latest version of DiskMaker and start the application.

Disk Maker App

Step 2: Click on the . icon Yosemite (10.10) button. The app will then search for the installation file (which you downloaded). Once it finds the file, it will prompt you to use it to create a bootable USB. Verify the location of the file and accept.

Step 3: Then, select the type of USB drive you will use and then click the . icon Erase then create disk button for DiskMaker to do its magic. The result will be an installation USB drive larger than 5GB in size.

Now, if for some reason this method doesn’t work for you or you simply don’t want to use it, here is the second method, using Terminal.

Important Note: Don’t forget to only use Terminal if you’re comfortable with it, as it’s pretty advanced and you can mess things up in your Mac if you take a wrong turn.

Using the terminal

Step 1: Open Terminal on your Mac. Then copy and paste the following code into it:

Open terminal

sudo /Applications/Install\ OS\ X\ Yosemite.app/Contents/Resources/createinstallmedia –volume /Volumes/Untitled –applicationpath /Applications/Install\ OS\ X\ Yosemite.app –nointeraction

terminal with code

When you’re done, make sure your USB drive is plugged in to your Mac, then authenticate with your password and press Return to run the command.

After a few minutes, your Yosemite installation USB drive is ready to use.
