How to Move iTunes Library to a New Computer With CopyTrans TuneSwift

My main concern with iTunes is the lack of control over my iTunes library and ultimately what my media collection is. I always fear the inevitable struggle whenever I need to move my iTunes library well…anywhere. Of course, I’m a total tech geek, having found a complicated and incredibly frustrating way to get around, but it’s certainly not easy and certainly not fun.

CopyTrans TuneSwift is a program that promises to help me and my friends out of misery. No, don’t kill us, but solve the aforementioned problem with iTunes.

Note: This tool must be installed on a Windows computer, although it can be used to transfer Windows iTunes library to a Mac. Additionally, until March 15, you can use the activation code TUNESWIFT-ACTI-VATE-ME to receive a free, fully loaded copy of the software.

Find and Use CopyTrans TuneSwift

Visit the CopyTrans TuneSwift website and click the purple Start Download button on the home screen. The program that you installed is not actually TuneSwift, rather, it is a suite of CopyTrans applications. Select CopyTrans TuneSwift from the list and the tool will quickly install and open.

TuneSwift has one thing going for it, it’s sheer simplicity. In fact, the home screen couldn’t be simpler, featuring three large clearly labeled buttons. You have the choice to Transfer, Backup, or Restore your iTunes Library.

Switch your library

You have the option to switch to another PC or a Mac, the only difference is that you will have to manually update your iTunes library on your Mac, while TuneSwift can help you with the process on your PC.

Switch to a Mac or PC

You have several options here, move your library to a new computer, a new folder/drive on your computer, or an external hard drive. In my experience, there isn’t much difference between the three, they all save the same file and they all let you save it wherever you want.

Switch to PC

After you choose one of the options, although they all do the same thing, another screen will ask for a specific folder or drive to save your library. With all three options, you can save the file to a folder on your current computer or to an external drive.

Restore your library in Windows

If you have TuneSwift installed on the PC that is receiving your iTunes library transfer, you will be able to use the built-in Restore function. It works great and helps alleviate the frustration of backup/transfer features.

Selecting Restore from the Main Menu will bring up a new screen asking you only for the destination folder (it will default to the correct iTunes folder if you have iTunes installed) and the backup file to restore from, which will be the .tsw file that you most likely saved on an external drive.

Restore I Tunes . library

Hit Start Restore and let the program do the rest. You have successfully migrated your iTunes library from one computer to another.

I didn’t mention TuneSwift’s backup feature because it serves no real purpose. No matter what you choose, transfer or backup, you will get the same results. Your iTunes library is changed to a nice, clean .tsw file and saved anywhere you want.

It’s your call on whether you use that file as a backup or move it to another computer. At first glance, this tool seems to have tons of features, but when you really get to use it, there are only two. They certainly could have found some more useful features to include in the package. The good thing is it’s free now.

TuneSwift may not be perfect and certainly lacks standout features, but it gets the job done. And if you’ve ever spent any time searching for “iTunes library transfer”, you know how valuable this software can be. I just hope that in future updates they will remove some extraneous buttons and “features” and replace them with real, usable features.
