In chats, you can request to send secret messages to others. It can be OTP, credentials, private media or files. Facebook Messenger is probably the last major messaging app to implement a disappearing or disappearing message feature for their mobile app. Here’s how you can send disappearing messages in Facebook Messenger.
Facebook-owned WhatsApp has allowed users to send disappearing messages. Messenger has rolled out Vanish mode, but it’s limited to the US region. What about others who rely on Messenger for private messaging?
Activate secret chat
Facebook hasn’t implemented a feature that disappears messages in normal chats. You can’t just open a chat and start sending messages with a timer.
Before that, you have to activate a secret chat with a person. Secret Conversations is Facebook’s end-to-end encryption solution to deliver private messaging experiences to over 2 billion users.
There are several ways to enable secret conversations in Facebook Messenger.
Enable Secret Conversations from User Profile
Follow the steps below to enable secret chat from user profile.
Step 1: Open Facebook Messenger on iPhone or Android.
Step 2: Open a chat where you intend to send a temporary message.
Step 3: Tap the contact name at the top.
Step 4: Scroll down and select Go to secret conversation from the More Actions menu.
If you’re sending a temporary message for the first time, you may not have an active chat thread in the app. In that case, you need to enable secret conversation from the compose menu.
Enable Secret Conversations from the Compose Menu
Step 1: Open Facebook Messenger and click the compose button at the top.
Step 2: Turn on the lock switch at the top to enable end-to-end encryption for your messages.
Step 3: Choose your friend’s name and you are in a secret chat.
Send disappearing messages in secret chat
After you turn on secret chat, you can send a temporary message in the chat. This is the way.
Step 1: Open the secret chat.
Step 2: You will find the timer menu right next to the chat box. Touch it.
Step 3: It will open the disappearing message menu from the bottom.
Step 4: You can choose another timer option from 5 seconds to 24 hours. We like the options offered here. They’re not just limited to 3 or 4 options.
Choose an appropriate time, and from now on, any messages you send will be deleted from both sides when the recipient sees the message. For example, if you select 10 seconds, all new messages will be deleted for each person 10 seconds after they were seen.
After the other person sees the message, you’ll see a timer directly next to the chat bubble. That indicates the time remaining for the message to disappear from both sides.
Change the disappearing message timer
You selected 10 seconds as the disappearing message timer and now you find it too low in some cases. Facebook Messenger easily allows you to change the disappearing message timer within the app. This is the way.
Step 1: Open a secret chat in which you have turned on auto-disappearing messages.
Step 2: Tap the timer icon in the text box and check the current timer.
Step 3: Select a new timer from the same menu and Messenger will show a message to both parties with a new disappearing message timer.
You can also change the disappearing message timer from the profile menu. Go through the steps below.
Step 1: Select the secret conversation in Facebook Messenger.
Step 2: Tap the profile name at the top.
Step 3: From Privacy and support, select Disappearing Messages.
Change the timer from the following menu.
Delete secret chats
Normally, you don’t need to delete secret chats if you use the disappearing message function. All your messages have been deleted automatically from both sides.
But if the secret conversation has served a purpose, you may want to remove the thread from Messenger entirely.
Step 1: Open the Facebook Messenger app and identify secret chats by checking the little padlock icon under the profile picture.
Step 2: Swipe left on the chat thread.
Step 3: Select Add and click Remove to remove all traces.
Create a private environment in Facebook Messenger
The ability to send temporary messages in Facebook Messenger is limited to Android, iPhone, and iPad. You can’t send the same using Facebook on the web. Go ahead, use the tip above and start sending disappearing messages in Facebook Messenger.
