If you want to hide files and folders from the eyes of other computer users, the process is quite simple in Windows.
The technique mentioned below is not a perfect way to hide everything as anyone who is computer savvy can easily crack it. But if you don’t have such people in your family and friends, this can be an easy way to hide your secrets from them.
Here are the steps.
For Windows 7 & Vista users
Step 1. Click the Start/windows button and go to the Calculator option. Now click on the Organize tab and click on Folder and Search Options in the drop-down menu.
Step 2. Inner folder option, go to View tab. Now, click on the Hidden files and folders option and make sure that the “Do not show hidden files and folders” option is selected (it is usually this by default). Click the Apply button once you’re done.
Step 3. Now go to any folder you want to hide. Right click on the folder. Go to properties option from the right click menu.
Step 4. In the general tab, check the Hide box in the Properties section and click the Apply button.
Step 5. Now confirm the change by selecting the appropriate option.
This will make your folder hidden. You can check it by going to the location and you will notice that the hidden folder does not exist. It actually exists there but hidden under the settings. You can view your hidden folders by going to the Folders option (Step 2) and selecting the “Show hidden files and folders” option.
Hide Files and Folders in Windows XP
For those using Windows XP, the steps are the same except for the first step. Here you need to click on Tools at the top of the Window you are on and there you will find Folder options.
The remaining steps are the same as above.
An extra step to ensure the privacy of your files is to move them from popular folders like My Documents, My Pictures, etc. to a separate folder that people don’t normally browse, and then hide that folder.
