Usually, when you play a YouTube video, the on-screen buttons disappear immediately or with just one tap. Recently, I noticed that buttons like pause and video progress don’t disappear automatically even after being pressed. Also, there’s a new X icon in the bottom right corner. I have to press that button every time to hide the controls. It makes watching videos on YouTube a bit annoying. If you are also facing the problem of YouTube button control not going away, then this post gives solutions to fix that problem.
Hopefully after trying the fixes mentioned below, you won’t have to press the X to hide the screen controls. The buttons on that screen will automatically disappear.
Start.
Turn off the Accessibility Menu and Switch Access
Android 9.0 introduced an interesting accessibility menu on Android phones and tablets. I enabled this setting on my Google Pixel 2 XL and discovered a new button on the bottom panel that gives quick access to notifications, Google Assistant, recent apps etc. Little did I know it also enable YouTube controls. I had to turn it off for YouTube to work properly.
Here are the steps to turn it off.
Step 1: Open device settings and tap Accessibility. If you can’t find it, look in System Settings or Additional Settings. You can also use the search feature to find Accessibility settings.
Step 2: Once in the Accessibility settings, tap Switch Access. Then turn it off on the next screen.
Step 3: If your phone is running Android 9.0 Pie or later, tap the Accessibility Menu and turn it off.
Step 4: Restart your device and open YouTube.
Clear cache
You should also try clearing the cache for the YouTube app to fix the problem of the YouTube control button sticking on the screen and not disappearing. Here’s how to do it.
Step 1: Open device settings and go to Apps/Application Manager/Apps and notifications.
Step 2: Here in All apps, tap YouTube.
Step 3: Tap Storage, then Clear Cache.
Clearing the cache will not log you out of your device or delete any downloaded videos. It only deletes temporary files and is different from data deletion.
Update app
Many times, you need to update the app to fix any bugs in older versions. Go to the Play Store and find YouTube and YouTube VR. Update both apps. Then restart your device.
Switch to website
If the problem persists, watch your YouTube videos using a website such as youtube.com on any mobile browser. You can also try the YouTube Go app, which is a smaller version of the app designed for devices with less memory and areas with poor Internet connections.
A video is completely enjoyable only when it is viewed in full screen. Sometimes, YouTube faces another problem when the navigation bar does not hide in full screen mode, disrupting the surroundings. Here are the solutions to hide it.
Switch to another app
If you see a navigation bar in the YouTube app, switch to another app using the recent apps key. Once you’re in the new app, return to the YouTube app. The bottom bar won’t be there.
Tip: If your device is running Android 9.0 Pie version or later, you can use the overview selection feature
VR mode on/off
The YouTube app makes any video in full screen virtual reality (VR) friendly. This option is available in the video settings. To hide the navigation bar, you need to enable VR mode first and then turn it off.
This will force the video to go into full screen view without the navigation bar. So turning this mode on and off will solve your problem.
To do so, follow these steps:
Step 1: Open the YouTube video in full screen mode. Then tap the three-dot icon in the upper right corner and select View in VR.
Step 2: While in VR mode, tap the cross X icon to close VR mode. You will be taken to normal mode. Now watch any video and you will not see the navigation bar.
Turn off Picture-in-Picture mode
Sometimes, picture-in-picture (PiP) mode can be the cause of problems due to bugs in the app. Disabling this mode proved helpful. Here’s how to do it.
Step 1: Launch device settings and go to Applications/Application Manager.
Step 2: Tap YouTube in All Apps.
Step 3: Scroll down and tap Picture-in-picture. Turn it off.
It’s not the best solution if you like PiP mode, but it can be one of the options for troubleshooting.
Easy to control
Like all apps, even YouTube struggles sometimes. We hope the above fixes will help solve the problem of the YouTube button control not disappearing when you want to watch a video. Once YouTube is up and running, you can loop and organize your videos in a variety of ways. And if you want to download YouTube videos, you can legally do it.
However, it’s easy to forget the time on YouTube. So, interestingly, you can set a time limit to track your watch time.
