How To Add Titles And Tags To Files In Windows

Let’s say you have a series of images of different monuments (like the Taj Mahal, Leaning Tower of Pisa, etc.). Now, obviously you can search for them individually using the search box. But, wouldn’t it be great if you could just type “monument” there and it pulls out all those images? This can be done by adding the corresponding tag to each of those image files.

You can manually add tags and titles to any file in Windows. It can help you organize them in a better way.

Here are the steps to do that.

Go to the file’s properties by right clicking on the file and clicking options. Now click on the “Details” tab.

Image properties

In the Description you can see the following fields:

  • Title
  • Subject
  • Rating
  • Tag (used as a keyword, one can search for a file using this term).
  • Comment
To assign a value to all of these terms, simply hover over the empty area next to it. For example, when hovering the mouse pointer next to the tag area, the “Add Tag” text box appears. Now add a relevant tag to the file, which you will use to search for it.
This file is an image of the Taj Mahal, so I added the “Memorial” tag to it. Similarly, you can add other information.
Note: You can add multiple tags to the same file.

Now search for any file using the start menu search box. If I enter monument in the given cell, TajMahal.jpg appears in the results. That’s because the tag is associated with the image file.

Search by tag

Get in the habit of assigning tags and titles to important files. The header is useful when the name of the file doesn’t inform you of its contents. You can also add tags and titles in Windows explorer. In the details pane, click the empty space next to the title and tag.

Add Windows 2 card

That’s how you can add tags and titles to files in Windows to facilitate easy searching.
