Prevent Users From Deleting Cookies & Browser History in IE

A few days ago, we told you about completely deleting your Google search history from your browser. That means anyone can easily remove traces of their web activity with certain steps. Well, to be honest, one can still recover them but it won’t be easy.

It is recommended to clear cookies and browser history if you are not using your PC. But if it’s your computer and someone else is using it for a while, you might not want to clear all cookies and history. This article talks about ways to prevent users from deleting them in Internet Explorer.

There are two options to get started. The first is to create another user account. Deleting the web history in that account won’t affect your account.

If the above method does not work then you can always do it by editing the Windows group policy editor and that is what we will discuss in detail.

Here are the steps.

1. To edit the group policy editor settings, click the Start button. Type gpedit.msc in the search box and press enter.

  • Go to Tools->Internet Options.
  • In the Internet Options dialog box, go to the General tab. In the browsing history, click the Clear button.
  • In the Clear Browsing History dialog box, you cannot select the checkbox next to Cookies.

You can see there is a yellow message at the bottom that says “Some settings are managed by your system administrator”.

So that’s how you use the group policy editor in Windows to prevent the deletion of browser history and cookies in Internet Explorer. The Group Policy Editor is a great tool for managing multiple settings. We will talk about it in future articles.
