Windows Phone 8: Configuring Guest Account (Kid’s Corner)

Lock up

I think one of the standout features that distinguishes a mobile operating system like iOS from a desktop operating system is multiple user accounts.. or more importantly, guest accounts. Android made the leap by introducing guest accounts in the latest version of Jelly Bean but

it’s limited to tablets at the moment

. And as you can guess from the title of this post, Windows Phone 8 also offers this feature.

However, you shouldn’t expect much from a smartphone guest account. Unlike a computer, a smartphone is a personal device that is unlikely to be shared much…unless you have children. That’s why Microsoft has cleverly named this Windows Phone 8 feature Kid’s Corner. Yes, it’s parental control on the phone.

With this feature, you can create an additional account (in addition to the default account) and configure the access level of that account for the phone (rather, apps). This concept has been built to allow your kids to use your phone without having to worry about them infiltrating your personal files and folders. Today we will see how to set it up.

Note: The Windows Phone 8 device used for this post is a Nokia Lumia 920. The steps are the same for all WP8 phones.

Steps to enable Kid’s Corner on WP8

Step 1: Swipe the Start Screen to the left to get to the list of apps. Tap to open Setting screen.

Windows Phone Settings

Step 2: On System installation search screen children corner. It should be turned off. Click to enable and configure it.

Note: If you haven’t set a password for your phone until now, you’ll have to do it here. Makes sense, doesn’t it? An additional account means your account will be locked.

However, the password will also apply to the Kid’s Corner account. It’s a personal call to agree or disagree with that. For me, that still makes sense as that will act as a layer of protection against unwanted access to the phone. The account is for your “Kids” and you should allow them to pass.

Use and customize your account

The account can be accessed by swiping the lock screen to the left instead of swiping towards the top edge. This is Kid’s Corner lock screen.

It also has to be swiped up and unlocked before the Start Screen is available. This is a sample.

You will be able to customize the size and position of the tiles directly like on the original Start Screen. Besides, you can tap custom to change some other settings.

Custom Kids Corner

You can give it a name, choose a background image and change the theme. To add more apps or remove existing ones, follow the instructions Setting on your base account.

To exit, just press the lock key on your phone. Next time unlocking will work normally.

Note: You can have one guest account (Kid’s Corner account) at a time. I wish there was an option for multiple accounts and we have a provision to protect each account with a different password (different from the base account).

Conclusion

The concept is good, however it needs to be refined before being fully utilized. Until enjoy with what you have. I am loving it at the moment.
