Create a Custom Toolbar In Windows To Quickly Access Programs & Files

We previously introduced Jumplist Launcher, a tool for quickly launching apps through the Windows 7 taskbar, and FSL Launcher to eliminate desktop clutter by arranging all the desktop shortcuts in an organized manner and then launching them.

Although Windows 7 introduced a “pin to taskbar” feature to permanently place frequently used program shortcuts on the taskbar, there is another way to quickly access your favorite programs and apps without going to the start menu or desktop. It’s a toolbar feature available in all versions of Windows.

By creating a custom toolbar, you can easily access your favorite programs. You can add as many programs as you want and arrange them in a way that suits you.

Here is a step-by-step guide to creating a custom toolbar in Windows.

1. Create a new folder anywhere on your computer.

2. Now create subfolders inside the newly created folder. You can create as many subfolders as you want. Give every subfolder an appropriate name.

3. Name the new folder. Change it from “New Folder” to “My Apps”. Now, move the program shortcuts you often open into these subfolders. For example, I moved Windows Live Writer, Skype, Chrome, Firefox, Picasa, Paint and other similar applications to different subfolders.

4. After moving all the shortcuts, right click on the taskbar, go to Toolbars -> New toolbar….

5. Select the “My Apps” folder and click the “Select folder” button.

6. Now you can see two right arrows (>>) on your taskbar, left of system tray. Click on it and it will show you all the subfolders in the My Applications folder. You can hover over it to see the programs within it. Click any program’s icon to launch it quickly.

7. You can add more shortcuts to the My Applications folder at any time. You can drag apps over the >> icon on the taskbar to quickly add shortcuts to them.

8. Right click on the taskbar where the folder name “My Applications” is written. Click the “Open Folder” option to quickly open the folder.

Note: In addition to creating separate subfolders, you can always move shortcuts directly to that folder. Subfolders are just used to organize the main folder (“My Apps” in this case).

That’s how you can create a custom toolbar and get one-click access to all the major tools and applications you use. [ via Jeet Blog and Gizmo’s freeware]
