Connect, Sync Windows Phone 8 With Windows 8 PC – Guiding Tech

Windows Phone Connector

Syncing the various devices you own and the services you subscribe to is one of the best ways to stay up to date with all the information you need. I’m talking about data like documents, contacts, pictures, videos and music. If you’ve taken care of the settings and sync options properly, you’ll never have to worry about any of these. And that is one of the reasons to buy a smartphone. Probably the most compelling reason if you ask me.

Continuing with the series of posts on Windows Phone 8, today we will see how to sync it with Windows 8 PC.

Note: The Windows Phone 8 device used for this post is a Nokia Lumia 920. The steps are the same for all WP8 phones.

Connect your phone

The Windows Phone desktop app is what bridges the gap between your phone and your computer. You can search the Store to download it, or you can simply connect your phone to your PC and enable automatic downloads.

If you’re using Windows Phone 7.x, you’ll need the Zune software. If you own a Mac, there’s a Windows Phone app just for you.

To connect your phone to your PC, use the USB cable that came with the box when you purchased your phone.

Begin

Once you have the software and you connect the device to your machine, it will launch the application on its own. Otherwise, search for the app by going to the Start Screen and typing phone window. Click on the application shown in the image below. That puts you to begin with.

When you connect for the first time, you will be asked if you want to join the WP app improvement program. It’s your personal call there.

Posting this, you will see a screen asking you to name your phone. Choose a name if you don’t like the default name…nobody likes it.

Alternatively, you can choose to automatically import photos when the phone is connected. Don’t worry, you can also change it later.

Content Synchronization

When you go through the app’s home screen, you’ll see a list of your photos, music, and videos right there.

If you scroll to the right, you’ll see what’s available in the store and on the internet. The cool thing is that you can search, download, and install apps on your phone right from this interface.

If you want to add more content viz. photos, music, and videos, click one of the icons. On the next screen click Files to select a folder. Ideally the ones listed there are your libraries.

More files

If that list is not exhaustive, click Additional. That will list out more options and then you can navigate to the desired location.

Option to add files

Besides, you can always navigate to the phone folder through Windows file explorer. There you can directly add, remove and copy content from/to your phone and computer.

There is another way to sync. That’s through SkyDrive, and you can read the details here. However, we recommend doing most of this while using Wi-Fi. It helps your battery last longer and saves you data costs.

Synchronize contacts

You don’t have to worry about doing this through your PC. If you have a Microsoft account (you must have it, if you have Windows Phone), all your contacts will be imported from there. Also, when you add another email account or service, the contacts will be imported from there. Example – Google Contacts.
