A Beginner’s Guide to Pinterest and How to Use it For Content Curation

Pinterest is attracting a lot of attention lately, not to mention the interest of investors. It has overcome barriers and is among the top 10 social networks and top 100 websites in the world according to several sources. It seems to be the next big thing for marketers and of course, investors.

Pinterest is a virtual pinboard…like a bulletin board with pictures. When you come across an interesting image, photo, video, article, or anything else that interests you, you can “pin” it to your Pinterest account. What you get is a colorful collage that can be categorized into individual panels. As a social network, you are free to exchange your “pins” with friends and family on Pinterest. Leave a comment and start a conversation around pins.

Pinterest is currently invite-only. That doesn’t mean it’s for a select few. Ask someone on there about the invite or sign up for yourself. I received my entry within 24 hours.

Pinterest is easy to use

The appeal of Pinterest is in its user-friendliness. There are two ways you can use to create your table:

1. Use the Pin It bookmarklet to pin anything you like to your board.

2. Search Pinterest and other boards – pin what you like to your boards.

For example, you can search (say Google Image Search) for travel photos (places you want to visit) and pin it. Alternatively, you can use the search feature to pull images from other people’s boards to pin them to yours.

How to use Pinterest to curate content?

The two ways above outline the speed and ease of gathering content and grouping them into neat categories. Because Pinterest is a more “visual” social medium than others like Twitter and Facebook, the quality of what you pin will determine the quality of your pinboard (and the followers you attract).

Pinterest gives you clean, clutter-free whitespace to fill in relate to visual images. Take for example my table of travel destinations that I have planned for the future:

Content has been curated from travel sites, Google Image Search, Flickr and pinned from other sites with similar travel interests. This “vision board” is a prime example of visualizing your wishes and dreams on Pinterest. You can extend this by planning your vacation on Pinterest – choosing photos of the places you plan to visit and building a visual brochure on the Pinterest board.

The scope of content management is huge because you are limited only by ideas. Below is a snapshot of the categories you can explore. Of course, you can go beyond what is mentioned here.

Creative uses for Pinterest are on the rise – well-known and lesser-known brands are using pin boards as a means of branding, for example. Take a look at the General Electric pinboard or the Volkswagen board. Pinterest’s simplicity doesn’t detract from the fact that images can effectively tell stories on their own.

What do you think about Pinterest?

If you had to use it for content management, where would your board be?
