How to Roll Back Drivers in Windows 7

We humans believe, or should I say, follow a false myth that new is always better. The best example I can give to prove this statement false is the latest update of my graphics driver.

Until I used the old monitor driver, everything worked smoothly. No game crashes, no blue screens, no FPS issues et al. But last week when I updated the driver to its latest version, I received each of the above problems on a hard disk.

Hot Tip: Backing up default software drivers in Windows is a good thing, so make sure you also check out our article on backing up drivers.

While there is a System Restore option that can help me restore my computer and thus return the drivers to an earlier state, I don’t want to lose all the settings and files that I changed after the update. Restoring a hidden copy doesn’t work in this case, and the worst part is that this isn’t a single file we’re talking about.

The simplest remedy is to roll back your previous driver. Rolling back your old drivers is very easy in windows, even easier than installing them. Here’s how you do it in Windows 7:

Step 1: Right-click the Calculator icon (on the desktop or from the start menu) and click the . button Manage select.

Step 2: In the Computer Management window click on Equipment management on the left sidebar.

Step 3: Now locate the driver you want to restore, right click on it and select Property to open the driver properties window.

Step 4: Navigate to Driver and click the Back button to revert to the previous driver version. Windows will ask you to confirm your action and start the process.

Back to the driver

Restoring drivers is easy even for basic users but always make sure that the problem on your system is just due to a new hardware update. Furthermore, keep in mind that you can only restore a specific driver once.

So the next time you start having problems after installing a new driver, consider rolling back to the previous driver as the first troubleshooting step. Hope that helps.
