Apple continues to focus on user privacy with add-ons like Hide My Email and iCloud Private Relay on iPhone, iPad, and Mac. While the former hides your primary email address, the latter helps shield your browsing and location information from websites and advertisers. After updating macOS Currency, you may see an alert that iCloud Private Forwarding is active or iCloud Private Forwarding is unavailable on your Mac. This is what iCloud Private Relay means is not available on Mac.
First, you need to know what iCloud Private Relay means on your Mac and whether it will be useful to your workflow. Then we’ll show you how to turn off iCloud Private Relay on your Mac.
What is iCloud Private Relay?
iCloud Private Relay is Apple’s VPN service with a tweak. While not a complete replacement for a dedicated VPN service, iCloud Private Relay allows users to hide their IP location and browsing activities from advertisers and trackers. Here is how it works.
iCloud Private Relay works silently in the background. You don’t need to enable any toggles in the Mac System Preferences menu. The privacy add-on is only available to iCloud+ subscribers. You must pay for one of your iCloud or Apple One storage plans to enable iCloud Private Forwarding on your Mac.
Admin can see your IP location and DNS request whenever you visit any website. These advertisers build your custom profiles to track your online activities based on your browsing history and IP address.
When browsing any website in the Safari Mac browser, iCloud Private Relay kicks in and separates your IP address from the DNS request. The encryption company makes DNS requests to an Apple-branded server and sends the encryption keys to a third-party server.
Because Apple only has encrypted DNS requests, the company can’t see the websites you browse on Safari. Instead of sending your exact IP address to a third-party service, Apple will share an approximate one. Unlike VPN connection, Private Relay does not share IP location from another country. Apple is still sending your location, but it’s not the exact location.
Apple uses Cloudflare servers to send modified IP locations and encrypt DNS requests. Whenever Cloudflare services experience an outage, iCloud Private Relay also stops working. You’ll see an ‘iCloud Private Relay is unavailable’ message on your Mac, iPhone, and iPad. However, the power outage did not last long. When services come back online, macOS will display the message ‘iCloud Private Relay is active’.
Turn off iCloud Private Forwarding for Wi-Fi networks
We recommend enabling iCloud Private Relay for unsecured public Wi-Fi connections. For your home or office Wi-Fi network, you can disable this option. This is the way.
Step 1: Click on the Apple icon in the top left corner.
Step 2: Open the System Preferences menu (System Settings in macOS Ventura).
Step 3: Select Network.
Step 4: Select your Wi-Fi connection and uncheck the ‘Limit IP address tracking’ option.
Disable iCloud Private Relay in Apple Mail and Safari
Did you know advertisers can track your IP location via email? Private forwarding provides ‘Message protection’ to the Mail app to hide your IP address and download email content privately in the background. This makes it harder for the sender to track your Mail activity. If you’re using the Mail or Safari alternatives on your Mac, you don’t need to enable Forwarding separately for them.
Step 1: Open the Mail or Safari app on your Mac.
Step 2: Click the application name in the menu bar and open the Options menu.
Step 3: Swipe to the Privacy menu.
Step 4: Uncheck the option Hide IP address in Safari (Protect Mail Activity in Mail).
Turn off iCloud private forwarding notifications on Mac
When your Cloudflare server is having a hard time, you may get dozens of ‘iCloud Private Relay Unavailable’ warnings. You can use the steps below and turn off Private Forwarding on your Mac.
Step 1: Open the System Preferences menu on Mac (refer to the steps above).
Step 2: Select Apple ID.
Step 3: Click Options next to the Private Relay menu.
Step 4: Select the Off button and macOS will no longer distract you from the Privacy Relay transitions.
Understanding iCloud Private Relay on Mac
While iCloud Private Relay is a boon for Safari and Mail users, it’s irrelevant to those using other browsers and email clients on Macs. If you come from the second group, you can disable this and stop receiving ‘Privacy Relay’ warnings on your Mac.
