VLC: Get Subtitles, Resume Videos from Last Position

Automatically download subtitles in Vlc Shrink

VLC is one of the most popular multimedia clients out there, and it’s close to our hearts at Guiding Tech. VLC can do more than just play any video file you throw at it. The fact that it’s free and open source is just the beginning.

We love VLC: That’s why we decided to write an eBook about it. You can read it online here.

From the outside, VLC seems pretty basic. Honestly, there are competing media players that have more features. But luckily, it looks like VLC has taken notice of this issue and is trying to integrate some great new functionality. Chromecast support is supposed to roll out sometime this year!

Today we are going to talk about two great features added in VLC 2.2 and how to use them: automatic subtitle download and resume video from its last position.

How to automatically download extensions

In the VLC Ultimate Guide, we covered the best extensions, one of which is VLSub. Extensions for VLC are pretty awesome, but they’re not easy to install. You can see the process here.

Now, with version 2.2, VLC has decided to integrate the VLSub extension directly with the application. But it’s still in the extensions menu, which can lead to some confusion.

Upload video, go to VLC in Mac, then hover to Extensions and choose VSub. On Windows go to See -> Extensions.

This window will allow you to search through the extensions automatically and manually. Click Search by hash or Search by name to start searching. In my experience, I find that Search by name works better. The Search by hash search for subtitles using metadata.

After you find the subtitle you are looking for in the list, click it to highlight it and click Download selection button. In a few seconds, the subtitles will be downloaded and embedded in the VLC video file.

Manual search: There will come a time when searching by filename alone will yield no results. At such times, you can manually enter the movie or TV show name. If it’s a TV show, you can even specify the season and episode number.

Resume Video from Last Position

This was also possible via an extension before, but I think it works better now because it’s a native feature.

Here is how it works. You are watching a long video, a movie or a lecture in VLC and for some reason you need to turn it off. Now, when you reopen that video in VLC, it will show you the following prompt.

You can choose to start the video from the beginning, resume playback from where you left off, or let VLC know you want Always continue playback. This means that the next time you launch a video, VLC will automatically start from where you left off and there will be no pop-ups.

You can go to Interest -> overview -> Resume playback to override any previous settings.

What is your favorite VLC feature?

VLC keeps getting better with each new release and I’m happy for that. What is your favorite VLC feature? Share with us in the comments below.
