How to Use Smart Widgets in the Samsung Galaxy S22 Series phones

Samsung Galaxy S22, Galaxy S22+ and Galaxy S22 Ultra bring some new changes to the table and smart gadget is one of them. Like good widgets, these also allow you to view certain information on the home page in a smarter way, like the iPad’s smart tile. All you have to do is place it strategically on one of the home screens and then add the necessary apps.

But unlike iPad smart gadgets, Galaxy S22’s One UI 4.1 OS allows you to tweak smart gadgets to some extent.

Let’s see how to use smart widgets on Samsung Galaxy S22 series smartphones.

Where is the smart gadget?

Like regular widgets, you can find Smart Widgets in the Widgets section. Long press on the home screen, select Widgets and Smart Widgets will be right at the top of the stack.

Currently, One UI 4.1 offers three types of smart widgets, depending on the size and type. The only drawback is that you can’t see the default apps there. However, the thumbnail is enough to give you a rough gist.

How to add or remove smart widgets

Android users may already be familiar with how to add and remove widgets. Smart gadgets work the same, and adding or removing them is an easy process.

Step 1: Long press on the home screen to open the Widget panel, select one of the Smart Widgets and tap it.

Step 2: Tap the Add button to add the widget to one of the home screens.

Once added, swipe left/right on the widget to slide through the different widgets. If you’ve already added a weather widget, you’ll need to add a location.

As noted earlier, these smart widgets are nothing but stacks of items. The space-saving design means you don’t need to create multiple home screens to accommodate them all. Instead, simply swipe over the smart widget to see all the information at once.

Removing widgets is also a simple process. Long press on the smart widget and press the Delete button. That is all.

How to Customize Widgets

As noted earlier, One UI in the Samsung Galaxy S22 series phones offers several customization options. The best part is that they are easily accessible. The steps are very simple. For instance, you can add and remove widgets from smart widgets, change styles, adjust transparency levels, etc.

However, you will not be able to adjust the size of the smart widget. But considering that the phone allows for a lot of customization options, I was satisfied with this limitation.

1. How to Add/Remove Apps from Smart Widget

Step 1: Long press on smart widget and select ‘Add widget to smart widget’ option.

Step 2: Select the application from the list. There are quite a few apps available, and you can choose something as silly as Netflix or as serious as Gmail.

At the same time, the number of widgets available for the application is displayed next to them and this is a big plus.

Step 3: Once done, tap your selection and that’s it.

It is worth noting that One UI has no limit on the number of widgets for a smart widget. So if you’re comfortable with a stack of 5 items, it’s totally doable.

To delete a widget, swipe left on it until you reach the widget you want to delete.

Long press and select Remove widget from smart widget.

2. How to Customize the Widget . Style

To customize the style of a particular widget, navigate to it by swiping left. Next, long tap on the widget and select Install Current Widget.

Note that this option is available for widgets selected for apps like Photos, Clock, Weather, etc.

To change the clock style, tap any of the styles and you’re done. Interestingly, you can also adjust the transparency of the clock app.

3. How to rearrange Widgets inside Smart Widget

By default, the smart widget will add a new widget at the end. And this may not be a favorable situation for many. For example, the beautiful frame of Google Photos may not show up if you keep it centered. The same goes for the Clock app.

To rearrange the widgets, long press the smart widget and tap Settings. Next, press and hold one of the added utilities as shown below.

Now, sort them according to your preferences.

What Smart Widgets Are Available

As noted earlier, One UI in the Galaxy S22 allows you to play with a number of apps. You can add default apps like Maps, Netflix, Calendar, Notes etc. Also, if there are other Android apps on your smartphone like Quotes or TickTick.

Tap on the Add Widget option and then select the app. It is done. However, you must ensure that the widget style matches the actual shape of the smart gadget.

Widgets Stacks

So that’s how to use Smart Widget in Samsung Galaxy S22 series smartphone. The idea here is to design the stack according to the home screen’s use case scenario. For example, you might keep a smart gadget purely for entertainment purposes and have apps like YouTube Music, Netflix, and Google Photos. And in the next screen, you can have work-related application widgets.
