AirDrop, the seemingly magical technology that lets you send links, files, and media between iPhone, iPad, and Mac seems understandable on the surface. If you’re still not sure what AirDrop is and how it works, check out our explanation.
AirDrop works on device-to-device connection based on Wi-Fi and Bluetooth LE. It is compatible with Macs running OS X 10.7 Lion or later along with iOS 7+ devices. If you want to transfer files between your Mac and iOS devices, and vice versa, you’ll need to upgrade to iOS 8 and Yosemite.
Use it for what?
For those deeply invested in the Apple universe, AirDrop is a godsend. Here are some ideas on how to use it:
- Send links from iOS to Mac and open them instantly in the default browser (works both ways if you’re using Safari on a Mac).
- Send video files from Mac to iOS device before departure (no annoying iTunes sync required).
- Send files such as PDF documents from a Mac to an iOS device. Once the file is sent, you can open it in iBooks or any third-party app.
- Send photos from an iOS device to a Mac. Really helpful for tech writers like me. We take a lot of screenshots.
Using AirDrop on iOS
Drag up Control Center and tap the . icon AirDrop button. From here you can turn it off, turn it on for Contact or Everybody. The Everybody optionally make your device visible to any Apple device within 30 feet. But don’t worry, you still need to authenticate before accepting any file transfers.
To send something from iOS, you’ll need to open the familiar Share page. Here, at the top, you’ll see all the nearby devices you can send media to.
Just tap the person’s picture and you’re done.
When you receive a file on your iOS device, you need to accept it first. Once the transfer is complete, you will get a menu asking where you want to open it.
Use AirDrop on Mac
To use AirDrop on your Mac, you need to have both Wi-Fi and Bluetooth turned on. Go finder and click AirDrop to see all connected devices.
Sharing media from Mac works in two ways. Once the connected devices are recognized in this AirDrop window, simply drag the files over their profile picture and the files will be authenticated.
Similar to iOS, you can use Share button in any app to get AirDrop select. ONE Share The option is also available in the right-click menu.
Troubleshooting AirDrop
Like magic, AirDrop doesn’t always work. If it’s causing you problems, try the following.
- On a Mac, go to System Preferences -> overview come back Hand turn it off and on again
- On your iOS device, go to Setting -> overview -> Hand and do the same
- Restart both Mac and iOS devices
- Forget the Wi-Fi network and try connecting again
This usually solves the majority of AirDrop issues a user may encounter.
