You will agree that an Excel worksheet can be up to thousands of rows and columns long. You will also agree that when you are working on such a worksheet, you may have to navigate deep rows and columns. This will take you out of the reference row and column, i.e. cell A1, where you may need to revisit frequently.

Now, using scrolls is not one of the best ways to get back to that tile. Instead, we’ll see three better and more fun ways to do this.

So without further ado, let’s move on to A1.

Hot Tip: Also, check out our post on various ways to jump from one sheet to another. There’s a lot more to what you use.

1. Use keyboard shortcuts

For me, this is the easiest and fastest way to get back to A1 from anywhere in the spreadsheet. All you need to do is press these two keys together: Ctrl + Home

Exception: This method will not get you to A1 if you have enabled the permutation pane on rows and columns. In such a case, it will take you to the first row, the first column after the fixed panes.

Take a look at the image below. Here, rows 1 through 4 and columns A and B are in frozen mode. pressing too Ctrl + Home will take you to C5.

2. Use the Go To dialog box

This method has an extra step and it will take you a little longer to get to A1. However, unlike method 1, it guarantees you will jump to A1 no matter where you are and no matter what is in freeze mode.

Step 1: Press either F5 or a combination Ctrl + WOOD. That will kick in Go dialog box.

Go to dialog A11

Step 2: On the dialog box, below Authority to solve text box, type A1 and press Enter or click ALRIGHT button.

Quick Tip: This method can be used to navigate to any cell quickly. All you need to know is the reference of the cell you want to move to.

3. Use the name box

We know that MS Excel has a name box that shows the reference of the cell you are in. You can actually use this box to jump to cell A1.

To do that, type A1 in the name box and press Enter. Immediately, the reference goes to A1.

There’s a second trick here. You can actually define a name for cell A1, for example: Home page. You can then click the drop-down name box and select Home page to jump to A1.

Conclusion

How often do you navigate away from the A1 reference? And how often do you have to go back? If the answer is “very often,” you need to keep these tips in mind. However, not all of them, you can choose the ones you like best or feel most comfortable with.
