The Easy Way to Get Chrome’s Pin Tab Feature in Firefox

Google’s Chrome web browser has been featured many times on Guiding Tech, highlighting an excellent feature (or 15 of them) or explaining an invaluable extension. The impressive functionality Google brings to the web browser keeps us and the public coming back for more. However, alas, Chrome isn’t for everyone, and its known instability can be an obstacle for those who enjoy Firefox’s stability and ability to save your open windows and tabs in case the browser crashes outright.

Sometimes when you are a Firefox user, Chrome jealousy can start. A standard aspect of Chrome that is not present in Firefox can become the object of lust and cravings may emerge.

During my Internet travels, Chrome’s Pin Tab feature is often a sought-after addition to Firefox’s browsing experience. Luckily for you, there are several Firefox extensions that can add similar features to your favorite Firefox browser.

What are these extensions?

The two extensions that we will focus on are FaviconizeTab and PermaTabs Mod.

Note: Neither extension is compatible with Firefox 4 Beta, but will run perfectly on 3.6.

PermaTabs Mod activates “permanent” tabs that are user selectable and will automatically open every time you open Firefox. The only change in size that will happen is the removal of the “x” used to close the tab. It will also turn yellow (or another color of your choice) to indicate that it has been made permanent.

FaviconizeTab reduces the horizontal space occupied by a particular tab, use only its favorite icon to save some space in your browser’s usually crowded tabs area.

I prefer to use both extensions because FaviconizeTab offers Google’s Pin Tab feature which saves space, but you need PermaTabs Mod’s permanence to complete the package. With both, you can have a compact and fixed tab that will open with your browser all the time.

First, FaviconizeTab

Step 1: Visit the FaviconizeTab extension page to download and install the file. It’s a simple and quick process.

Step 2: Once the extension is installed, its actual use is easy. A simple right-click on any open tab will give you the option to Faviconize it, making it narrower.

FaviconizeTab will then show the favicon only for the selected site, similar to the screenshot below.

Then, PermaTabs

Step 1: Open the link to the PermaTabs Mod extension page to download and install the file.

Step 2: When the installation is finished, PermaTabs Mod will automatically be activated. It works like FaviconizeTab, by adding a permanent Tab button to the right-click menu of the open tab.

Once you select the Permanent Tag, it will change color and become an automatic addition for each subsequent browsing session. Right click again to remove this feature.

And when you combine both of the extensions above, you get something like what you see below.

See how much screen real estate you can save in Firefox? It certainly helps reduce a bit of clutter between tabs. Try it out and let us know how it works.
