There’s nothing special about the Gallery app (or even the new Google Photos app) on Android. When all you want to do is view the photos on your device, recent ones or in a folder, they work for you. But you couldn’t ask for more. No organization, security or search features to talk about. If you have hundreds or thousands of photos on your device, the default apps will soon exhaust you.
These are just highlights of why you need to switch to a third-party photo library/photo management app. Thankfully, there’s no shortage of them on the Play Store. If you’re not willing to try them all to decide which is best, don’t worry, I’ve done the hard work for you. The winner is QuickPic.
1. Sort by Folders and Moments
The default apps have a limited sort view. Recents or folders. QuickPic scans your image and creates a “Moment”. They are based on time and place. So all the photos from your one trip will be in one album. And of course, you can also browse based on folders.
2. Characteristics of Supreme Organization
QuickPic makes moving images between folders really easy. Make sure you are in Folder view, touch and hold to display the selection menu and select all the images you want.
Now tap on the three-dot menu. Here you will find options to Move or Copy images. Select the options you want, then select the receive folder and you’re done.
3. Full screen preview
I take a lot of screenshots, and I mean a lot. Later on, I used some of these screenshots as header images that you see at the top of some articles. Now, when I’m doing that, I need the screenshot to take up the entire screen.
KitKat comes with a full screen “Immersive Mode” but it is pathetic that neither the Gallery nor the Photos app support this mode. For me, this is the only reason to love QuickPic in the first place – it comes with a full screen preview by default.
4. Integration with Dropbox and other cloud services
From the menu button, you can integrate with cloud services like Dropbox, Google Drive, Flickr and even 500px. Once I authenticated with Dropbox, I was able to select the folders I wanted to scan for pictures and videos.
Now, I can browse through those images without going to the Dropbox app, to be honest, the app isn’t really made for viewing photos (it’s Carousel though).
5. Hidden feature and security lock
From Setting -> Protect you can create a password pattern or pin. This can be used for authentication when viewing hidden folders or launching apps.
To hide a folder, touch and hold the preview, tap the three-dot menu, and select Hide.
6. View EXIF data
WTF is EXIF? We’ve talked a lot about EXIF data before. What it is, how to view it on the desktop and even how to clean it up.
Select Detail from the three-dot menu will show EXIF data for the photo like where the photo was taken, what lens was used, shutter speed etc. There is also an option to open the location of the image in the app. Map.
7. Photo Editing
QuickPic isn’t a full-blown image editor, but it can handle basic operations like cropping, resizing, rotating, and flipping.
8. Wi-Fi transfer between two phones
If you and a friend both have QuickPic installed, you can select multiple photos and videos, tap the . icon Share button, select Wi-Fi transmission and wirelessly send media to another device over Wi-Fi. If you don’t have a Wi-Fi connection, you can turn your phone into a Wi-Fi hotspot to send media.
Always back up your photos
With apps like Dropbox or even the Google+ upload option built into the Photos app, it’s easy to automatically back up your personal photos and videos.
