Lollipop has brought one of the most requested features to Android smartphones – multiple user accounts, including guest mode. In the past, when you wanted to give your phone to a friend to call or browse the web, you had to hope they weren’t snooping around, which of course they did. You’ll use things like app locks, data encryption, and tons of other apps to hide stuff from your friends.
But now, with Lollipop, you don’t need to be paranoid anymore. Because by clicking a button and going into Guest mode, all your data becomes private. Includes app data, contacts, photos and videos. There’s also a screen pinning feature if you don’t want someone to leave the current app they’re on. We will talk about this feature in detail below.
How guest mode and user accounts work
Lollipop already comes with a Guest Mode button in the user profile. Switching to it doesn’t take more than a few seconds. Guest Mode exists in a limited environment. It does not have access to any of your data, including files or folders. It can’t even access your app.
However, it is possible to download apps from the Play Store. If a guest user downloads an app that you installed, it will be copied to their system part instead of being re-downloaded. If they update the app, it will be updated for all users.
You can block calls for guest users by clicking Gear icon next to their name after going to Other settings from profile view. User accounts don’t have administrative rights, but they can modify things like Wi-Fi networks. Also, their privileges are the same as the guest users.
When you switch from a guest user to an admin, the Guest mode state is saved, including their customizations, downloads, and apps.
How to Enable and Use Guest Mode, User Accounts
Swipe down on the notification drawer with two fingers and tap the icon User icon in the upper right corner. Here you will see a Guest icon. Tapping that will immediately switch you to Guest mode.
Touch Add users to create another user profile, such as for your child. Once that’s done, their name will show up on this screen.
To delete a Guest session or user account, tap Other settings and if you are logged into Guest mode you will see a Delete guest button. To delete a User Profile, switch to that profile and from the same Other settings screen touch the three-dot menu and select Delete.

How to enable and use screen pinning
Screen pinning allows you to select an app or a screen and Pin it to the screen. This means that without pressing the correct set of buttons, the person cannot exit the application and go snooping.
To enable screen pinning, go to Setting -> Protectswipe down and tap screen pins. Here, tap the toggle to turn it on.
Now go to the app/screen in question, tap overview (multi-tasking button) and in the bottom right corner of the preview you will see a little Pin icon. Click it.
To exit pin mode, touch and hold the . button Backside And overview button at the same time. For added security, you can even request an unlock pattern before disabling the mode.
When the screen is pinned, you cannot access notifications either. But tapping the Home button gives a hint on how to turn it off.
You can never be too secure with your phone
Your phone is your life. The most intimate conversations live there. So you are bound to be paranoid about it. It’s best to regularly back up important data and use the highest level of security you can afford.
Android is great in this regard. You can even customize the device lock based on the current time. How to make sure the data on your Android phone is safe and secure? Let us know in the comments below.
