The luxuries that used to be able to write a letter and tear it to pieces before sending are no longer. All emails, messages and tweets are sent over the internet instantly, and in the hectic daily life, there is no room for waiting or reviewing.
The best tactic to use to avoid occasional online mistakes is to prevent the unfortunate from happening.
Enable undo send in Gmail
If you use a Gmail account, there is a hidden feature in the Labs section of Setting that can bring you sweet relief from an embarrassing email. It is aptly named Undo Send.
Every time you send an email using Gmail, a yellow confirmation message appears. When undo send is enabled, it comes with an option to undo sending a message so that the message never reaches the recipient’s inbox. The option only appears for a few seconds, so you’ll have to act quickly after the first click Send.
To enable Undo Send, click the button Setting gear in Gmail and then click Settings in the menu. Click laboratory and scroll to find the Undo send lab. Click Allow radio button and make sure to scroll to the bottom of the page and click Save changes. From now on, you will be able to successfully retract the emails you have sent.
Note that this feature is only available for Gmail and more specifically on gmail.com. If you use Gmail on your mobile phone or in a third-party client, you won’t be able to undo emails you’ve sent.
Tip: If you’re still using the old Microsoft Outlook 2010 or 2013 desktop client for email, there’s a similar feature to Gmail’s Undo Send. If you’re aiming for item sent and click act menu you will see Remember This Message… As an option. Choose whether you want to delete only unread messages or delete unread messages and replace them with new messages to send.
Use the Airplane Mode trick to undo a text message
For iOS and Android devices, you might be surprised to learn that Airplane Mode (or Flight) will become your best friend if you’re in the habit of sending text messages (or iMessages on iOS). ) is not good that you regret.
For example, on iPhone, the blue or green progress bar at the top of a conversation shows how long it took to send the message. Unless you have a very high speed connection, this usually happens. To prevent messages from being sent, you’ll have to act quickly by turning on Airplane Mode.
On iPhone, do this by sliding your finger up from the bottom of the screen to bring up the Control Center. Then tap Airplane mode icon, disables all forms of data and connections.
On Android, swipe down to show your notifications, then, if necessary, swipe down again to see your toggles. Clap Airplane mode to disable it. (Some Android devices call it Airplane Mode.)
If you get a warning that mail hasn’t been delivered, you’ve saved yourself in time.
There is no feature to unsend text messages on either platform, at least none that works conveniently and efficiently. This means you are left with only one choice: shut down your connection as quickly as possible. If you’re not connected, that message can’t go anywhere. If you try to turn off Wi-Fi in time, your phone may fall back to the mobile data connection.
Prevent an unfortunate Tweet in TweetDeck
The main Twitter client and Twitter website have never been particularly introduced to powerful features, but fortunately, one that Twitter owns is: TweetDeck. TweetDeck has introduced a feature called Confirm Step that helps you click to verify your tweet before sending. This gives you a chance to avoid typos and make sure you’re tweeting from the right account as TweetDeck supports multiple accounts.
The feature is a saving grace for anyone who has done too many fake tweets, but you need to enable it first. Visit TweetDeck Online (or download the Mac or Google Chrome app) and sign in. At the bottom of the sidebar, click account and select the account you want to enable this feature for. Click confirmation step so the switch is on. Then close this window.
Now, when you click New Tweets To compose, a question appears under the text box asking you if you are “ready to tweet?” with a checkbox. Before tweet enabled, you must first check if you are ready.
This isn’t the perfect way to block tweets you don’t intend to send, but the second step certainly adds a welcome layer of protection.
