Semien was chosen by the White Sox in the sixth round of the 2011 MLB draft. 2011 saw him begin his professional career with the Kannapolis Intimidators of Class A.

In 229 at-bats, he concluded the 2011 season with a.253 batting average, three home runs, two triples, fifteen doubles, twenty-six runs batted in (RBIs), and three stolen bases. For the 2012 season, Semien was promoted to Winston-Salem Dash’s Class A-Advanced.

There he struck.273 in 418 at-bats, including 11 stolen bases, 31 doubles, five triples, 14 home runs, and 59 RBIs. Semien was regarded as the White Sox’s #8 prospect for the 2013 campaign.

Semien inked a $18 million, one-year contract with the Toronto Blue Jays on January 30, 2021. Semien was selected to start at second base for the AL in the 2021 All-Star Game and was named an All-Star for the first time in his career on July 1.

Semien and the Texas Rangers reached an agreement on December 1, 2021, for a seven-year, $175 million contract. For the second consecutive year in 2022, Semien led the big leagues in at-bats (657), sacrifice flies (10; tied with Alex Bregman and Alec Bohm), and plate appearances (724). He also hit 248/.304/.429 with 26 home runs and 83 RBIs.

He led the majors in error percentage with twelve. Semien again topped the league in hitting plate appearances (753 in 2023).276/.348/.478 with 122 runs, the most in the league. He and the Texas Rangers won the 2023 World Series on November 1, 2023.
