York was born to Keisha York and John York. He shares the same parents as his brother, Carson York, and his sister, Peyton York.
York was one of the greatest football kickers in the country while attending Prosper High School in Texas, where he also played soccer.
His 59-yard field goal in the Under Armour All-America Game broke the previous mark of 47 yards set in his high school career, and he had already committed to playing college football at LSU.

Prior to the start of the 2019 season, York was selected as the Tigers’ starting kicker. After a rough start to the season, in which he missed an extra point against Northwestern State and field goals against Utah State and Florida, he recovered to earn a spot on the SEC All-Freshman team and a spot on the second team of the SEC as the Tigers won the 2020 College Football Playoff.
York was a semifinalist for the Lou Groza Award, given to the best placekicker in college football, at the end of his sophomore season. He was perfect on extra points (36-for-36), nailed 85.7% of his field goal tries (18-for-21), and was a semi-finalist on field goals.
With 27 seconds left in the fourth quarter of LSU’s game against Florida on December 12, York made his career-long field goal of 57 yards to put the Tigers up 37-34 and secure the upset victory for LSU over the nation’s then-No. 6 squad.
At the conclusion of the season, York was selected for both the first-team All-SEC by the coaches and the second-team All-SEC by the Associated Press (AP). The Football Writers Association of America and the Associated Press both ranked him as a second-team All-American.
With the 124th overall choice in the fourth round of the 2022 NFL Draft, the Cleveland Browns selected York.
In his first game against the Carolina Panthers, he made all four of his goal tries and both of his extra point attempts, including the game-winning field goal of 58 yards that helped the team win 26-24.
York earned AFC Special Teams Player of the Week recognition for his efforts in his first professional game. In the final games of his rookie season, York made 24 of 32 field goals and 35 of 37 extra-point attempts.
On August 28, 2023, the Browns released York after failing in the 2023 preseason and acquired Dustin Hopkins from the Los Angeles Chargers in exchange for a 2025 seventh-round pick.
