Use Secret Conversations in Facebook Messenger
There are several reasons to opt in to a secret conversation in Messenger, such as exchanging confidential or private information. For such activities, it is appropriate to use secret chats.
Note: The screenshot below is from the Messenger app for Android. You follow the same steps on your iPhone and start a secret conversation.
Step 1: Open the Facebook Messenger app on your phone.
Step 2: Click the compose message button in the upper right corner.
Step 3: Turn on the key toggle at the top.
Step 4: You have an option to start a conversation with the contacts from the list. Messenger will suggest contacts based on your history and interests.
Tap a contact you want to chat with and start sending a message.
Before you go ahead and try to do the same trick on the Facebook web or the Messenger web, let us stop you right there. The secret chat option is only available on the iPhone, Android, and iPad Messenger apps.
Recent conversations in Facebook Messenger are separate from regular chats. When you compose a secret chat in Messenger, the app creates another chat thread with the same person. Your normal chat remains intact.
You can separate secret chats from regular chats by checking the little lock button below the profile picture on the Messenger home screen.
Secret chat content support
You can think of secret conversations in Facebook Messenger as a simpler (but much more secure) messaging experience.
Secret chats in Messenger allow you to send in the following format.

However, you can’t start a secret group chat, and you can’t send gifs either. Secret chats also do not support payments.

However, don’t expect your previous secret conversations on the phone to end up here. You’ll start fresh on your new phone, and Facebook won’t sync secret chats from your old phone to your new phone.
