WeTransfer: Share Files Up to 10 GB on Web, iOS, Android

Title Wetransfer

If I start counting the great cloud-based services that help me send files to my friends and family, I’ll run out of fingers in about 8 seconds. Even if you don’t know what “the cloud” is, you’ve definitely used it to send/store files. But for some reason, Gmail and other email providers still limit file uploads to just MB (sometimes as low as 25MB) and don’t support multiple file types.

Of course, there are places like Google Drive, Dropbox or Mega, that will let you share large files, but the experience is not as desirable.

The WeTransfer apps and websites do one thing well – allowing you to email large files and media to anyone. Oh, and you can transfer files up to 10 GB. All are free.

Easiest way to get there

You ask why use WeTransfer?

  • Free file uploads up to 10 GB, no registration required (for you or your recipient).
  • The file stays online for 7 days.
  • Instead of sending the file as an attachment, the recipient will receive a link.
  • It’s the easiest way to transfer files.

Android Apps

If you have an Android phone, the WeTransfer app is a must-have. It’s more powerful than the iPhone app and resembles a website. The app itself will list all the photos and videos you have. Just tap the ones you want to share, enter the email address and you’re done. But this is Android, you can do so much more.

WeTransfer integrates with Android’s built-in share menu. With it, you can send files to WeTransfer using any application that supports the share menu. This makes Android apps really useful. You can send documents from Google Drive, files in Dropbox, or any document on your local storage directly to WeTransfer.

iPhone Apps

iOS 7 is a closed system, which is why WeTransfer’s iPhone app is limited. With iOS 8, Apple is improving communication between apps, and in a few months iPhone apps will be able to function like Android apps. But for now, you can only choose photos and videos to share. If you are sharing a video, depending on your upload speed, it may take a long time.

The website is even freer and easier to use than the Android app. You can click Add files and select a file from the file picker or just drag and drop any file in the browser window. Once you’ve entered your and your friends’ email addresses and clicked Transfer button, the upload will begin.

When you enter the website, you will see a Share button. It allows you to switch to link instead of email. This way you will get the direct link after uploading the file. Useful if you just want to share it with someone via IM instead of email.

Give me the download link with the app

I don’t know why the WeTransfer apps don’t allow this but it would be helpful if I could get a download link instead of an email when uploading from my phone. It will make sharing files with WhatsApp contacts really easy.

WeTransfer Plus

If you’re a business, you can opt for the WeTransfer Plus plan that costs $10 a month and comes with 50GB of cloud storage. Plus, your files won’t be deleted after 7 days, and you’re password protected. If you’re using WeTransfer on a website, the usual limit is 2GB versus 10GB for apps. Using WeTransfer Plus, you can also increase this limit to 10 GB.
