How to Customize Your Samsung Galaxy Tab S2

With every passing year, we see some incredible high resolution products hit the market. Retina display is an effective buzzword, but the battle over resolution has long since raged and continues to be. We were excited to test the Samsung Galaxy Tab S2, but surprisingly it doesn’t have a Theme Store like its sibling smartphones.

Anyway, there are a few ways you can customize this tablet to your liking and make it more effective as a reading and multimedia device. Let’s see how.

1. Wallpaper

The Tab S2 comes in two variants – a smaller 8-inch variant and a 9.7-inch variant. Both have high-resolution screens of 1536 x 2048 pixels that form a 4:3 aspect ratio. This is great for reading, but not ideal for multimedia. In any case, a helpful user on the XDA forums has shortlisted the high quality high resolution wallpapers that can be used on the Tab S2.

I’ve used a few myself and really love the interface. These include many interests including Star Wars, Technology and even Material Design. After all, who doesn’t love beautiful wallpapers on their big screen device?

2. Backlit buttons

The back and multitasking buttons on the Tab S2 are backlit, but the problem is that they light up for a very short time (just 1.5 seconds). When they’re off, where do you tend to look for them, and if you’re not used to larger tabs, this can be frustrating. The best workaround is to install the Galaxy Button Lights app. Using this feature, you can hold the backlit buttons for more than 5 seconds, which makes a pretty big difference.

3. Reading mode

While Samsung seems to have missed out on some features (no theme store AND no custom grids for Tab S2? Why?!) on the Tab S2, this is an option they didn’t overlook. The Reading mode can be enabled using the toggles in the notification drop-down menu.

It works really well, especially since the Tab S2 has a high-resolution Super AMOLED display, and this mode really makes text stand out, whether it’s a browser or any other reading app. However, turn it off once you’re done reading, or you’ll complain that the multimedia has started to turn yellow on your brand new tab.

4. Animations are faster

This is an old Android trick that I haven’t had to use lately, but for whatever reason, the TouchWiz UI on the Tab S2 feels a bit clunky. If you have installed multiple apps and are having the same problem, visit Setting then the last option About the device and then continue mining on build number several times until you get a small message stating that the Developer options are now enabled.

When you see them, go to Draw section and change the animation scale for Windows Animation Scale, Transition animation scale And Animation duration scale from default is 1x to 0.5x.

5. Create a group of similar apps

Again, this may only be of interest to people who have a lot of apps installed on their tablet. However, if you are one of them, you should really create folders in the main app drawer to create groups for better organization. There’s no need to install a 3rd party launcher for this, and you shouldn’t start dragging app icons around either.

Instead, just press Editor in the top right corner of the app drawer screen and organize the apps in related groups like I created a group for Google Cloud. This is also a faster way to uninstall apps, by tapping the minus sign in the upper right corner of the app you want to uninstall.

Love tablets?

Primarily intended for reading and multimedia entertainment, tablets are not the game-changers that manufacturers have come to expect. How do you use your tablet though? We’d love to hear from you in our forum.
