If you’re a proficient user of Evernote, you don’t have dozens of notes…you have a few hundred notes. We don’t blame you. Evernote is a great place to save, store, and organize every important detail in your life. Evernote will receive text, web pages, PDFs, images, and more.
Evernote organization works in two basic ways. You have a single notebook to store content. Or you have a stack of notebooks (sometimes called nested notebooks). You can treat them like files and folders but with notes.
You should do your best to organize and save content in relevant files and folders, especially taking advantage of card feature.
But the best way to extract information from Evernote is the search bar. And it’s just as powerful as the rest of the app.
Searching for a new natural language
Evernote now supports natural language search. So you can search for things like “notes written in Orange County” and it will show all the notes you wrote in Orange County.
You can do much more with this. If you use Siri or Google Now to ask for things, Evernote’s search will make you feel at home. Only here its text instead of voice. But the same natural language rules apply.
search operator
Evernote, like Google has search operator (parameter) support. Search operators are used to provide search-specific actions. For example, using “tag:IFTTT” (where “tag” is the operator and “IFTTT is the keyword) will show notes tagged as “IFTTT“. Evernote supports operators like Notebook, Tag, Contains, Source, Created, Modified, etc
You can enter search operators yourself or choose them as options from the drop-down menu. Game over too, just using the menus takes longer than writing the text. And once you use the text method a few times, it becomes muscle memory.
There are many ways that you can use operators once you understand the basics. You can use multiple operators in the same search field, just make sure they are space-separated and well-defined.
Multiple search operators allow you to search in multiple notebooks or apply multiple parameters all in one keyword search.
Example: notebook: IFTTT notebook: archive tag: recipes
The search results above will bring me back all the notes that I have tagged as recipes (IFTTT recipes) from the archive or from the dedicated IFTTT notebook I have.
negation operator
Negative operators (a word I totally come up with right now) are operators that hide results for a particular search. If you’re looking for a specific invoice in your multi-year archive, you can use the -tag or -created operators to hide results from specific months/years, or just omit the entries altogether. Notes are created before a specific date.
When searching gets difficult, always remember the negation operators.
Operators You Must Know About
Any – Normally when you enter a 2-3 word query into Evernote’s search field, Evernote will first search for notes with all the words in them.
If you use the any: operator before searching, you’ll see notes containing any words.
Example: any: Evernote IFTTT . formula
inTitle – Do you know the title part of the note you’re looking for? Great! Use the inTitle: operator and you won’t have to rummage through hundreds or thousands of words in your Evernote notebook.

created – Using this operator you can search for notes created on or after a specific date. Use the negative -created operator to find notes created before the specified date.
You just need to enter the date as YYYYMMDD (no spaces) or it won’t work.
Example: create: 20140401
sourceUrl – This operator will allow you to search for notes/snippets on the web saved from a specific URL.

Evernote has support for OCR search where their app will search through scanned PDFs or images that contain text. Sorry, this feature is only available to Evernote Premium customers.
