Any parent should be properly concerned about the dangers of unrestricted browsing. Inappropriate websites that promote violence, hatred and racism are common, not to mention the possibility of stumbling across adult-related content is quite high. With iOS 12, Apple did what it best — adding a ton of app management features with the new Screen Time. Therefore, gaining complete control of Safari, the main portal of the Internet on an iPhone or iPad, is not possible.
If you’re looking to prevent your kids from accessing the internet altogether, blocking Safari is pretty easy to do through Screen Time. Alternatively, you can choose to block unwanted websites on Safari and even impose time limits on individual browsers or websites. There’s also the option to remotely manage restrictions from the comfort of your iOS device if you’d like. Let’s see how you do each of these in turn.
Block Safari
iOS 12 lets you block Safari in seconds thanks to built-in restrictions that come with Screen Time. The steps below will help you do that.
Tip:
Step 1: Open the Settings app.
Step 2: Tap the option labeled Screen Time.
Note:
Step 3: On the Screen Time panel, tap Content and Privacy Restrictions.
Warning:
Step 4: On the Content and Privacy Restrictions screen, tap Allowed Apps.
Step 5: Turn off the switch next to Safari.
That’s it. Safari is completely blocked on iOS devices and will not appear in the Home screen unless you explicitly choose to allow access to it in the future.
Block the app store
You should know that just blocking Safari won’t prevent your child from downloading another web browser from the App Store and using that browser as an alternative to accessing the internet. Therefore, you should also restrict access to the App Store to prevent that from happening in the first place.
Step 1: Tap iTunes & App Store Purchases from within the Content and Privacy Restrictions screen.
Step 2: Tap the option labeled App Settings.
Step 3: Select the option labeled Do not allow.
Just like Safari, the App Store should also be blocked. Remember that you must lift the restriction whenever you want or allow your child to install the app.
Block website
Why block Safari completely when you can create a better environment for your kids to surf the internet? If harmful websites are a concern, Screen Time’s online content restrictions should give you peace of mind.
Step 1: On the Content & Privacy Restrictions screen, tap Content Restriction.
Step 2: Tap Web Content.
Step 3: Tap the option labeled Limit Adult Sites. That will prompt Screen Time to apply a filter to completely block websites that contain adult-related content or topics. To block additional websites, use the Add site option under Never allow.
Alternatively, tap Allowed sites only to block access to all websites (except 10 very kid-friendly sites). Then use the Add visible sites option to allow manual access to secure sites of your choice.
Imposing time limits on Safari
iOS 12 also lets you go further by limiting overall Safari usage using Screen Time’s App Limits function. It can be quite helpful if all you want is to minimize the amount of time your kids spend on the internet. In addition, it fully complements the web content restrictions you went through above as a means to gain more control over browsing activities.
Step 1: On the Screen Time panel, tap the device name.
Step 2: In the Most Used section, tap Safari.
Note:
Step 3: Tap the option labeled Add limit. The graph at the top of the screen shows how much time Safari has been used in a day (or week), along with a daily average to help you determine how much you want to reduce usage.
Step 4: Specify the amount of time you want your child to use the app daily and then tap More. You can also customize the amount of time for each day of the week using the option labeled Customize Days.
As soon as the daily time limit expires, Safari will immediately lock itself on your child’s iOS device. To manage time limits in the future, tap App Limits in the Screen Time panel, then tap Safari.
Add a time limit to the site
Instead of (or in addition) imposing a time limit on Safari, you can also do the same for time consuming web pages. Screen Time shows all web addresses visited via browser (along with time spent on each site), you can use this to monitor and limit time spent on pages specific web – such as a social network.
Step 1: In the Most Used section where you selected Safari above, tap on the website you want to impose a time limit on. Usually, these sites should have the Safari icon listed next to them. However, social media web apps like Facebook and Instagram have their respective icons instead.
Step 2: Tap Add limit, specify a time period and then tap Add.
iOS will automatically block the website when the time is up, while other websites will be accessible without any problems.
Remote management
You have come across some useful ways not only to block access to Safari but also to restrict its use. But did you know that you can also do the same thing right from your iPhone or iPad? That’s right — thanks to Apple’s Family Sharing integration with Screen Time, any family members you add also appear in the Screen Time panel.
Note:
Simply select a family member in the Family section and you’ll find a dedicated Screen Time panel that’s reminiscent of the existing one on your device.
From then on, you can monitor app usage, block Safari, impose time limits, etc. Just like you interact directly with the device. The steps are roughly the same, and any restrictions or time limits will apply cumulatively to all devices owned by the family member.
Much safer online experience
Screen Time is one of the best services available on iOS 12. Not only can you block Safari easily, but you can also perform a host of other actions without feeling too drastic. Combine it with remote management and the level of control you get is phenomenal. Check out our full iOS 12 Lifetime guide for more information on how each feature works.
