When WhatsApp for the Web returned in January, millions of users around the world sighed in unison (well, not iPhone users). It’s not much. It is not a complete standalone desktop application like Skype. But it was anything else. While it relies heavily on Android phones for authentication and internet connectivity, it still gives users an easy way to troll their high school friends in WhatsApp groups. After all, there’s nothing better than a physical keyboard to troll some classy action.
It seems unlikely that WhatsApp will launch with a desktop app of its own or an API like Telegram. But now there is an unofficial desktop client for WhatsApp. Find out what it’s all about and how to use it.
Unofficial WhatsApp for desktop
Unofficial WhatsApp for Desktop (use this Github download link if the site doesn’t work for you) is a free and open source application created by Alexandru Rosianu (who also created an Facebook Messenger is similar for desktop users). It is available for free on Windows, Mac, and Linux.
It is just a wrapper for WhatsApp for Web client. That means all your chats still go through the Android app securely, and since it’s not a third-party client, the chances of WhatsApp going against the app are pretty low.

How to use unofficial WhatsApp for desktop
You need to run the latest WhatsApp app on your Android phone. Now tap the three-dot menu and select whatsapp web.
On your desktop, launch the app and the QR code will show up. Use your Android phone to scan the QR code and that’s it, you’re connected.
In my testing, the app lost connection a few times. But it could be an issue with my OnePlus One or the CM 12.1 Nightly that I’m running.
