The modern iPhone’s Camera app comes with a Live Photo feature that records frames for 1.5 seconds before and after you press the shutter button. However, sharing Live Photo on WhatsApp is not easy. If you’ve ever tried to do that, WhatsApp will treat it like a still photo. However, there are ways to send Live Photos as GIFs via WhatsApp.
Note that when you share a Live Photo as a GIF, you will lose any audio recorded as part of the Live Photo. That’s not a big deal because the GIF image format doesn’t carry or support audio. With that disclaimer, here’s how to share Live Photos as GIFs on WhatsApp from iPhone.
Send photos directly as GIFs from WhatsApp
While WhatsApp is easy to use, it doesn’t work as expected when sharing Live Photos from an iPhone. Useful options are hidden behind menus and deeply nested so it’s a bit difficult to see and then use. Thankfully, how to share Live Photos as GIFs from WhatsApp requires only one thing to remember. Here’s how to share Live Photos as GIFs from within WhatsApp.
Step 1: Launch WhatsApp on your iPhone.
Step 2: Tap to open any chat you want to share Live Photos with.
Step 3: Tap the plus (+) button in the bottom left corner to open the attachments menu.
Step 4: Now tap on ‘Photo & Video Gallery’ to start selecting your Live Photos.
Step 5: Find the Live Photo you want to share, tap and hold on it to open the context menu.
Step 6: Tap the ‘Select as GIF’ option.
Step 7: You can use the control bar at the top to crop the GIF. Tap the send button in the bottom right corner to send the Live Photo as a GIF.
The recipient will be able to view the Live Photo as a GIF.
While this method is fun, it has one fundamental limitation – you can only do this for one image at a time. That means if you have multiple Live Photos that you want to share as GIFs, you’ll need to select them one by one, convert them to GIFs, and then share them in WhatsApp.
Send photos directly as GIFs from the Photos app
You can also share Live Photos as GIFs directly from the Photos app. While it’s not exactly a hidden feature, not too many people will spend a lot of time exploring the deeply nested options and the Share panel. This is a native feature, and you don’t need to use any extensions for the Photos app or third-party image editors.
Step 1: Launch the Photos app on your iPhone.
Step 2: Locate the Live Photo you want to share and tap the photo to open it.
Step 3: At the top left of the photo, you will see the text LIVE with a drop-down arrow next to it. Tap to open the drop-down menu.
Step 4: To share the photo as a GIF, select the Repeat or Exit option. Selecting the Loop option will create a regular GIF, while using the Exit option will create an Instagram Boomerang like a repeating GIF.
Step 5: Once you’ve made your selection, tap the Share button in the bottom left corner of the screen.
Step 6: In the Share Sheet, tap WhatsApp.
Step 7: Select the conversation to which you want to share the GIF.
Step 8: You can use the control bar at the top to crop the GIF. Tap the Send button in the bottom right corner when you’re ready to share.
Live Photo from iPhone will appear as GIF.
You can use the second method to share multiple Live Photos as GIFs at once. First, though, you’ll need to change all of those photos from Live Photos to Loop or Bounce. Then you can select all and share it via WhatsApp.
Share Live Photos as GIFs on WhatsApp
Apple has made it very easy to share Live Photos as GIFs. Before that, you had to use Shortcuts or a third-party photo editing app to convert Live Photos to GIFs. While that’s still the only way for most apps, the Photos app has become rich and powerful enough to eliminate the use of any keyboard shortcuts. And the whole process takes a few taps.
