How to Replace Dropbox With Google Docs Storage Using Insync

A few days ago, my brother emailed me asking for a solution to one of his problems. He wants to know if there is any way he can work on the documents and files in his Google Docs account – i.e. spreadsheets, presentations, etc – offline on different computers and sync them with Google Docs, just like with Dropbox except the Dropbox software will sync everything with your online Dropbox account and here he wants everything in sync with Google Docs.

We talked about a tool called KumoSync that allows

Real-time local document sync with Google Docs

and it works well if you just want to work offline on your Google Docs files and have them synced to your online account without any hassle. But if you want more, we have the right tool for you.

Insync is a simple app that gives you the ability to sync your Google Docs files across all connected devices and actually uses its storage like any other cloud storage engine, like Dropbox or SugarSync. Let’s see how to set up the app.

Step 1: Download and install Insync on your computer, the installation is quite simple and all you need to do is follow the on-screen instructions.

Step 2: After successful installation, run the program. When launched for the first time, the program opens a web page in your default browser and asks you to select the Google account you want to use with Insync.

Step 3: After selecting the default account, you will be asked authorize all rights application will ask on your selected account.

Step 4: Once your account is set up, an Sync folder will be created in your Documents folder. This folder will contain a subfolder called your Google account alias. After the first sync, all files from your Google Docs will appear in it.

The rest is simple, Now any changes you make in this folder will be reflected in your Google Docs account and vice versa. If you are not connected to the Internet at the time of making the change, Insync will store it in memory and automatically start the synchronization process once you are connected to the Internet as long as Insync is running in the background.

While Insync uses the Google Docs space to store your files, you can sync any type of file with it. You can create folders and subfolders to store files. These folders will be marked as collections in your Google Docs account.

Like any other cloud storage service, you can share files using your Insync account online. In the Settings page, you can view your storage details and make a purchase if it’s not enough.

My judgment

Insync is a very neat app to use Google Docs like Dropbox. If you’re a Dropbox user, you might want to stick with that, but if you’ve been working on Google Docs for a while, and all your files, you’re working there, you can give Insync a try. Overall, Google Docs storage definitely costs less when compared to Dropbox, so that could be another reason to replace Dropbox with Insync.
