How to Remix Reels on Instagram

Instagram’s Reels was born to compete with TikTok’s Duet option. Today, you can create a 15-second, 30-second, or 60-second Story to post for your followers and others. With the new Remix feature, you can use someone’s reel or respond to someone’s reel.

Remix will allow you to create a new Story in response to a Story posted by someone else and then place it next to the original Story. This post shows you how to get started with Remixing Reels.

How to use Instagram Reels with Remix

Instagram Stories are short-form videos that feature on the Explore page and can be shared back to Stories. Remixes can make Stories more interesting because it allows content creators to collaborate with others and create new entertaining mini-clips. Let’s say you stumble across a Story that you want to Remix. Here’s how to do it. This option is only available in the iOS and Android apps.

Step 1: Find an Instagram Story video that you want to Remix.

Step 2: Tap the three-dot menu in the lower-right corner below the Share button.

Step 3: Select the ‘Remix this Reel’ option that appears in the pop-up menu from the bottom.

Step 4: The screen will split into two places where the original video appears on the left side. Instagram will place the video on the right after you record or add a video from your camera roll. Press the record button to start recording your video.

Step 5: After capturing, you will be able to preview your Remix by tapping the relevant button.

Step 6: From the Preview window, you can go ahead and edit your Story’s audio, add captions or stickers, and write or doodle on it.

Step 7: When you’re finally satisfied with how it looks, click Next.

Step 8: You will see the Post page. Here you can write a caption for your Story, add a location, or tag people. Then tap Share.

Instagram will post the collaboration video to your profile and tag it as ‘Named Remix’ – the person who posted the Original Story. Their username also appears at the top of the Original Story in the collaboration video.

How to turn remix on and off for reels

Not everyone feels comfortable when strangers use their Stories. If you feel the same way, you can stop people from creating a Remix with your Story. You can turn this off for individual Stories or all (though the second option doesn’t seem to be available for all accounts).

How to disable remix for individual reels

Step 1: Go to your Instagram profile, find and open the Story for which you want to disable Remix.

Step 2: Tap the three-dot menu in the upper-right corner of the screen.

Step 3: A menu will pop up from the bottom. Select the ‘Disable remix’ option.

Can Remix your Story. For that, hit the ‘Remix This Reel’ option at the bottom of a menu.

Step 2: Select settings.

Step 3: Go to Privacy.

Step 4: Tap ‘Roll and remix.’

Step 5: Turn off the ‘Allow for Films’ option.

That’s it, other people won’t be able to use your Story.

How to enable remix for older reels

On the other hand, if you have Stories older than April 2021, then you’ll need to manually enable Remix as it won’t be enabled by default like newer stories.

The process remains the same – open an older Film Roll and tap the three-dot menu. This will bring up a pop-up menu from the bottom. Select the ‘Enable Remix’ option for that particular Story. Repeat the same process for the other Old Films.

Start remixing your reel

Instagram has been taking steps to position itself as a strong competitor to TikTok, and the addition of Remix demonstrates this strategy. If you still prefer Instagram over TikTok, try replacing this Duet on your favorite Instagram Reels. If not, you can return to TikTok or create an account for yourself if you don’t already have one.

Instagram also has another collaboration feature available, allowing Instagram users to create posts and Stories together. Check out our guide on how to create your first collaborative post or video.
