How to Personalize Android App Notifications Easily

Sometimes the notification drawer in Android becomes overcrowded with many notifications stacked on top of each other. And, most of the space is taken up by those fully expanded notifications (*ahem* Amazon Ads *um*). So, have you ever felt the need to personalize (or customize) such notifications in Android? You can combine multiple notifications of the same app in one notification, or always display the notification in an expanded view. Well, guys, don’t worry if you don’t feel the need. Because NOW YOU DO IT.

Android Notifications Personalization 1Let’s fix the notifications and personalize it the way we want.

Many developers are not taking full advantage of the Notifications API for Android. They don’t give you full control over the look of the notifications in the notification drawer. For your information below are the types of notices.

  • Bundle: Gather multiple messages into a single message. (Like we have in Gmail.)
  • Head-Up Notice: You know it. (ex: WhatsApp)
  • Multiline text: The message has a lot of text or data in it.
  • Elastic List: Scaled version of Multiline Text but can be stretched to get full view.

So now what if you could enable these different types of notification views and customize the look and feel of the notifications?

Let Nevolution begin

Yes you can. A new open source Android app called Nevolution can give your smartphone the ability to do so. Nevolution gives you the freedom to customize the notification view in the notification drawer however you want. Let’s dig deep and see how you can do it. It can run on Android devices running version 4.3 and above.

Choose an App Notification to Customize it

After you download and install the app, you’re pretty much done. If you already have a notification in the notification drawer, it will show up in Notification application’s list. Tap the notification to customize it.

Revolution 1

At the bottom, a custom button will pop up. With that, you have the option to make the notification reappear in the notification drawer if you’ve swiped it away.

Customize the look of notifications

I selected Flipboard notifications. And, its notification view is of type Elastic List. However, I always want it to display in multiline text view. Always expanded so I don’t have to stretch it down to see it fully. Now tap on the customize button. On the next screen, at the bottom, you will find different notification styles that you can apply to the notification. (Type of notification mentioned above).

So here I will choose Multi-line text style for Flipboard Notifications.

Revolution 2

Similarly, you can customize notifications by applying different styles. You can even merge notifications into a single message. For example, stories from your News app.

Revolution 3

Also, for messaging apps like WhatsApp and WeChat, you get special tweaks. You can separate multiple group messages into separate messages as shown below.

The notification list on the app’s home screen also acts as the notification log. It saves all its notifications and actions. You can make the notification reappear and take the notification action again.

It’s a great way to keep track of notifications and customize the way you want.

It is underrated

The app currently has mixed reviews on the Play Store with an average score of 3.7. I myself ran into some issues like notifications not showing up. However, if you have problems with the notifications and if it doesn’t work properly then you should install the extension pack. Go to the app’s settings and you’ll have the option for it. Alternatively, you can join the conversation about it on the XDA forum thread. One of the possible reasons is that another notification based application installed by you may be conflicting.

However, in my usage, it works fine. I would give it 4.3 out of 5.
