Ever notice how dim your Mac’s screen is if you leave it on for a few minutes and eventually go to sleep? Well, it does this to prolong battery performance, which every Mac user has come to expect. However, sometimes you may find this annoying and wish it could be disabled. Luckily, we’ll show you how to stop your Mac from sleeping in a few clicks.
In sleep mode, your Mac stops all visible activity while continuing to run important processes, clearly distinguishing it from the shutdown option. However, if you’re annoyed, we’ll go over 3 ways to prevent your Mac from sleeping.
Note: We’re running on macOS Ventura on a MacBook. So the options seen on the screenshot may vary, but the steps will be more or less the same on all Mac devices.
How to Disable Sleep on a Mac Using System Settings
This is a simple process. However, after the update of macOS Ventura, a few settings have been removed, one of which is Energy Saver. If you’re using a desktop Mac or Mac Studio, you can see Energy Saver. However, if you are using a MacBook, there is no such option. Instead, the option has been merged with the Lock Screen.
So we’re separating the method based on the devices you use:
1. How to keep your desktop from sleeping
Step 1: Press Cmd + Space on your keyboard, type System installationand press Back.
Step 2: Scroll down, find Energy Saver (light bulb icon) and click it.
Step 3: Now check the box next to ‘Prevent the computer from automatically sleeping when the screen is off’.
Step 4: Uncheck the box next to ‘Put hard disk to sleep when possible.’
Step 5: Finally, drag the ‘Turn display off after’ slider to Never.
There you have it. No need to type the password again and again. If you are using a MacBook, follow the method mentioned below.
2. Prevent MacBook from sleeping
Step 1: Press Cmd + Space on your keyboard, type System Settings, and press Return.
Step 2: Scroll down and click Lock screen.
Step 3: Click the drop-down menu next to “Turn off screen on battery when inactive” and select Never.
Step 4: Now, click the drop-down menu next to “Turn off display on power adapter when idle” and select Never.
That is all! It is simple. Now, if you don’t want to do it through System Settings, there are two other methods by which you can prevent your Mac from going to sleep.
How to Temporarily Turn Off Sleep on Your Mac Using Terminal
We will use a command called Caffeinate. As long as a Terminal window is open, the command will prevent your Mac from going to sleep. Isn’t it pretty cool? Let’s start with the steps.
Step 1: Press Cmd + Space on your keyboard, type Terminal, and press Return.
Step 2: In Terminal, type caffeineate and press Return.
The only change you will notice is that the cursor will move to a new line and caffeine will appear next to your username in the Terminal window.
Mind you, this only works as long as the Terminal window stays open.
If you try to close the window, a warning will appear asking, ‘Do you want to terminate the processes running in this window?’ If you click Terminate, your Mac will revert to the system-specific power settings.
