How to Install New Fonts in Mac OS X

Typography – if used elegantly – can dramatically enhance the look and feel of anything involving letters, numbers, or characters. For example, custom fonts can make for a great logo, as well as give the work a more relevant and valuable feel. Forget logos, even changing the default font on your operating system can create a unique everyday computing experience.

We have published a guide to installing new fonts on Windows. The process is easier and more streamlined on Mac OS X. This guide will tell you exactly that.

This is how you download the font.

1. Download the font

There are many free fonts out there. Sites like Smashing Magazine have lists of free fonts available for personal or commercial use.

2. Extract the font

Usually, fonts come in .zip or .rar files. This means you will need a program to unzip it. I use the free Stuffit Extension Tool. Once you do that, a new Finder window will pop up. Double-click the .ttf or .otf file and the Font Book application will automatically open.

02 Double click

3. Font Settings

Once the Font Book app opens, you just need to Install fonts.

03 Settings

4. Organize your fonts

Font Book automatically organizes your fonts according to default settings or user settings. This is a great feature because it allows you to quickly browse through your custom installed fonts. If you are a typography enthusiast, this is definitely the key.

04 Fonts

The Font Book can be accessed in the Applications folder, or just type it into Spotlight to find it.

05 Find Fontbook

You don’t need to reopen the app as the font collection will update quickly. For example, if you open Photoshop and just installed a font, you can simply go back to Photoshop and select the font.

06 Check fonts

The fonts are so much fun to deploy and choose from, and so easy to use! Don’t be afraid to try new fonts for different uses and have fun with your fonts. ????
