How to Find Exact Changes to Android Apps Post Update

Android app updates happen regularly. So much so that you might not look back if the developer added support for the latest Android N feature that might have been helpful to you. This is even more true for those who have automatic app updates turned ON.

And this is not just limited to features. App updates may also bring some permission changes or add some new permissions. To effectively track both of these, today we’ve come up with a shortlist of two apps that bring together all the new features and permissions of all your smartphone apps in one place. so you can analyze them easily. First we will look at the Change Log, the application to see the changes of the application.

Hot Tip: We also have many other cool app recommendations for you, which can be found here.

Change log

Currently, the only way to see the change log, which is what changed for better or for worse in the latest app update, is to visit the app page on the Play Store. We’ve all installed some app and it’s tedious doing it. Changelogs is the app for that purpose. Let’s see how to use it and its features:

Step 1: Download the app from here.

Step 2: When you open the app, it will ask you to sign in to your Google account. It is necessary otherwise it will not show the change.

Step 3: Once logged in, it will load all the apps present on your phone, in alphabetical order. The following pictures will explain the rest.

Apps that have updates available are shown with a green icon, like the one next to it Adobe Acrobat Readerin the picture above.

Cl application screen

Tapping on any app name will open a new screen with various options for the app as shown in the image above. You have several options like uninstall the app, update the app, its Play Store link etc in one place.

Permissions Explorer

This is the second app that allows you to view app permissions for all apps on your phone. App permissions indicate what apps installed on your phone have access to. You should check the app permissions as we usually ignore them during installation. While you can see the same in Settings > Apps, as shown below. Of course, the actual menu will vary slightly depending on your phone brand and/or Android version.

But it’s not the best way because you have to go back and forth to each app and scroll down. Permissions Explorer, not only compiles them in one place, it also categorizes them as shown in the image below.

Permissions explorer screen

If you want details about each permission, there’s a full list here, along with what each permission means. Now, the next question is, what to do if you see some apps with inappropriate permissions? Well, it’s harder if your phone is running Android 5.0 or higher. Google has its own (hidden) permission manager, App Activity, on Android 4.3 & 4.4, but it was removed in later versions. The options currently available are rooting your phone and/or installing a custom ROM. While there are plenty of apps on the play store that “enable” the hidden permission manager, they’re useless because root is required for it to work unless you’re still using Android 4.3 or 4.4.x. Other apps that claim to know the secret recipe are probably a fluke (mostly misses), working on your friends’ phones, not yours.

While installing or updating the application, we do not think about what has changed in it. Are these apps helpful to you or know of any other apps that provide information about the apps on your phone? Please share your thoughts through comments.
